Broaden your figure-drawing skills by exploring a variety of 'other' ways of drawing from a model. Some guided exercises will help you explore new approaches eg. drawing without lines or drawing movement; and we'll use a variety of materials eg. drawing with a brush, a stick, pen, crayon and pastel. While accurate observation is helpful, it won't be the main focus of this workshop. Instead, we will concentrate on the expressive qualities of each medium, and developing your own natural 'hand-writing'. This workshop is not suitable for beginers.

Join us on the 27th October for an evening with Julian Baggini – one of Britain’s most prominent public philosophers – to hear what a lifetime of philosophy can teach us about the art of flourishing in today’s world.

Aristotle identified flourishing as the highest good for humanity. But what did he mean by that? Are we as human beings any closer to flourishing now than we were in ancient Greece? And if not, why not?

In answering these questions, Julian will explore how the modern world leads us to repeatedly lose sight of what is truly of value in life and why individual and collective flourishing is so elusive today. Drawing on themes that have emerged across several of his 20+ books, he will offer insights for how we might live the good life every day – in small ways as well as big – and help those around us to do the same.

A guided day workshop exploring two or three different ways of creating abstract paintings, using acrylic paints. Some ways are based on shapes we see in front of us, so the result might be semi-abstract and some will be completely abstract. Most will evolve organically. Along the way you will use some less usual ways of applying paint to the canvas, creating texture, and we might include a little collage.

This workshop is an opportunity to explore cartooning both as an art form and means of self expression. You will learn how to draw cartoon characters using a variety of different techniques, and experiment with a range of drawing methods. Subjects covered include drawing faces and expressions, body shapes and postures, lettering, and cartoon language.

Suitable for all abilities, the session is designed to be fun and to inspire your imagination.

Daphné Chenel returns to Bristol Folk House for a special evening, just a few days before the release of her new album.

A French singer-songwriter based in Lisbon, Daphné moves between folk, indie pop and French chanson, blending a warm, distinctive voice with organic and delicate arrangements. After her first release, inspired by her early years in Lisbon, she is now opening a new chapter with a more intimate, airy and folk-leaning sound.

Her new songs explore travel, encounters, change, and that strange feeling of searching for yourself while slowly finding where you belong. The first single of this new project, Lisbonne, turns the city she has called home for several years into a character of its own, with its winding streets, memories and contradictions.

As part of a UK mini-tour, Daphné returns to Folk House, where she has already performed in 2024 and 2025.

A beginner level day workshop, drawing faces. In the morning we will draw from photographs and in the afternoon we will draw from a live sitter. Initially the tutor will explain and demonstrate how to draw a face from observation, and then offer you plenty of help or feedback whilst you are drawing. The emphasis will be on looking skills rather than relying on a formula...
