We’ve given our kitchen a fresh new look at Shaftesbury House thanks to a £10,000 grant from the B&Q Foundation 🙌

The funding has helped us upgrade key appliances and redecorate shared spaces, creating a more welcoming and practical environment for our companions to cook, eat and spend time together.

These improvements are already making a real difference 💚

Emmaus Bristol companions recently joined a cookery class at Community Kitchen — a Bristol social enterprise using food to bring people together and create positive change. 😋

Alongside staff and a trustee, the group worked together to prepare a vegetarian meal in a relaxed and supportive environment where everyone could try something new. 🍽

The session was a chance to build skills, step outside comfort zones, and enjoy shared achievement — with companions describing it as “simple to follow,” “enjoyable,” and something they’d “like to do again.” 💚

Giving back, together 💚

At Emmaus Bristol, “giving back” is at the heart of everything we do. From supporting people as they rebuild their lives after homelessness, to creating opportunities through meaningful work, every act of kindness helps change lives.

Every Wednesday, companion Nigel can be found volunteering in St Pauls. Making tea, pouring coffee, and serving food, he helps create a warm, welcoming space for people who need it most. And for Nigel, it’s about more than just volunteering — it’s about purpose, connection, and giving something back.

“We must also listen to those with lived experience.”

Great to hear the voices of residents and staff being recognised in the House of Commons yesterday, following the launch of our Rebuilding Lives report.

The report is shaped by people with lived experience of supported housing and highlights what’s needed to make it work well – from meaningful activity and purpose to community and long-term support.

During a debate on the Supported Housing (Regulatory Oversight) Act 2023, Co-Chair of the APPG on Ending Homelessness Bob Blackman highlighted the importance of listening to people with lived experience – echoing a key message from our report.

Supported housing works best when it offers more than a place to stay.

Yesterday (21 April), supported housing residents, providers and MPs gathered in Westminster for the launch of the Rebuilding Lives report in Parliament.

Around 100 attendees, including MPs, sector partners and funders, came together for an afternoon of speeches and discussion on the future of supported housing.

Emmaus Bristol Trustee Elaine Olphert, Companion Bunmi, and Re-use Manager Xanne attended the event alongside East Bristol MP Kerry McCarthy, taking part in discussions on the findings and the future implementation of the Supported Housing (Regulatory Oversight) Act.

Speakers included Emmaus UK CEO Charlotte Talbott, researchers Rosemary Blazekovic and David McCarrick, Sara Cooney from the Lloyds Bank Foundation, and MP Paula Barker.

The report, shaped by people with lived experience of homelessness, highlights the importance of community, purpose and flexibility in supported housing, alongside the need for sustainable funding and stronger national standards. 💚👏
