Stand: We Walk Together

Stand: We Walk Together Making quality prosthetic legs accessible in sub-Saharan Africa 🦿 In the process, we also saved these incredible pieces of technology from a life in landfill.

Legs4Africa is a UK registered charity that supports people with limb differences in sub-Saharan Africa. We recycle and ship prosthetic legs otherwise heading for the bin, and we work with local clinics and amputee-led organisations to improve access to rehabilitation, mental health support and training opportunities. Our ultimate aim is to ensure that people with limb differences in sub-Saharan A

frica have everything they need to live independent lives. Since 2014, we have shipped enough parts to build or repair over 10,000 prosthetic legs for people who otherwise may have never walked again. Learn more about our work by visiting our website: www.legs4africa.org

Why do so many people lack prosthetic legs?

It's , and we are recognising the fact that in low- and middle-income countries up to 95% of people don't have access to assistive technology they need.*

Assistive tech includes prosthetic legs. Meaning people can't work, learn or do the everyday things.

But why can't they access them?
🦿 Lack of affordable legs and supply chains.
🎓 Clinics lack trained staff, tools and equipment.
🏥 Amputees lack access to care - often clinics are few and far between.
💵 Lack of prioritisation of government budgets.

By building a solid infrastructure of care, we can unlock the everyday things for people with limb differences.

STAND can't supply everything...especially children's feet.

As there isn't a regular supply of children's prosthetics, we need to find new ways to provide care to younger patients.

So, STAND funded prosthetics expert, Longini Mtalo, to train the Gambian technician team to fabricate their own children's feet.

Training like this is essential to getting more people standing again.

Things just got real!

We have just made our partnership official with our old friends Nav'Solidaire!

They will take all our collected prosthetic legs, use their volunteer power to refurbish them, and store the legs for shipping to Africa.

⛵️ They will also continue to sail the legs down to Senegal and The Gambia.

Sadly this does mean we'll close down our well-loved workshop in Bristol. But it doesn't make sense for two charities to duplicate efforts and rent, meaning we can scale our impact and reduce costs.

STAND will continue to focus on what we do best, just with a few French friends and yachts thrown in for good measure!

A football game that changed everything.

Ansumana is from The Gambia. Like most young Gambians, he likes football.

In one unfortunate game, a tackle from another player led to a broken leg.

His family sought traditional healers.

Without suitable medical attention, a severe infection developed. Two separate operations failed, and doctors had to perform an amputation to save his life.

His journey of recovery started there.

With refurbished prosthetic components from , and the support from The Gambia's National Rehabilitation Centre, Ansumana was fitted with his new leg.

Learning to walk with a prosthetic is not easy. But despite this, Ansumana was walking independently in just 15 days.

Despite his condition, Ansumana's hope and rehabilitation journey are infectious:
“Even after the amputation, that doesn’t stop your life. Life is going to continue”.

Today at the United Nations, the President of the General Assembly is meeting with stakeholders to discuss road safety.

Why is this important to STAND?

According to our data, the largest cause of amputations is road accidents. Almost 35% of the amputees who are recorded through our partners list this as the reason.

If we tackle road safety, we ensure more people don't lose their limbs.

Most amputees globally don't have access to legs and care, so stopping the root causes is important.

The power of volunteers!

At STAND, we get lots of prosthetic leg donations. So this is when we enlist the help of volunteers like John, Keith, and the other men at the Cotswold Men’s Shed.

They help us with the mammoth task of breaking down the legs, so they are ready to be cleaned, sorted and fixed at STAND HQ. These are then sent to centres in sub-Saharan Africa to be fitted to amputees who need them.

"My hope is to walk on my own without any crutch."

After a road accident, Evelyn sadly lost her leg. Thankfully she was fitted with a donated prosthetic leg at the .ghana.

🩼 But her journey to walking again has just begun.

Access to prosthetic leg components is just one part needed for mobility.

For new amputees to walk, they need:
🦿 the right strength - so physio support is essential.
🦿 to learn how to use their new leg.
🦿 to cope with "phantom pain" from their amputated limb.

At STAND, we firmly believe that holistic support is needed for full recovery.
