💚 World Homeless Day | 10 October

Today is World Homeless Day, a chance to raise awareness of homelessness and recognise the people affected by it.

At The Julian Trust, we’ve been supporting people experiencing homelessness in Bristol for 40 years. Every week, our volunteers provide a warm welcome, hot food and a safe place to sleep for people who need it.

Homelessness can happen to anyone, and behind every statistic is a person with their own story. Everyone deserves dignity, compassion and a safe place to call home.

Last night, we welcomed the 18th Bristol Beaver Scouts to the Julian Trust Night Shelter 🦫

The 6-8 year old Beavers came along to learn more about homelessness and what we do at the shelter. The visit was specially adapted for little ears, with age-appropriate language and plenty of opportunities to ask questions!

It was lovely to welcome them through our doors and help the next generation understand a little more about homelessness, compassion and supporting our community. 💚

For some, Friday night means celebrating the end of the working week. For others, it’s about cuddling up at home with family and settling in for the weekend.

But tonight, around 60 people will come through our doors looking for somewhere safe, warm and welcoming to spend their evening or night.

Our Friday team are currently serving a choice of:

🍲 Pheasant, Leek & Bacon Stew
🌶️ Chilli non Carne
🥔 Mash & steamed cabbage
🥖 French stick

🚨 Emergency Clothing Appeal 🚨

Last night we completely ran out of underwear and also had very limited supplies of warm coats and jogging suit bottoms.

This sadly meant that we were saying goodbye to our guests knowing we couldn’t give the basic dignity of clean underwear, and could not offer them a coat to keep warm when they are sleeping outside 💔

We are doing an emergency appeal for these items, and below are also other items we were asked for and could not provide or were in short supply:

• Warm Coats (mens and women’s)
• Underwear (mens and women’s, mostly smaller sizes for the ladies - brand new only)
• Socks and trainers/boots
• Jogging suit bottoms (mens and women’s, mostly S-M sizes)
• Sleeping bags

We’d be so so grateful if anyone is able to help 🙏

A Night to Say Thank You ✨

Last night we brought our volunteers together for a special thank-you party, recognising the incredible people who have helped make 40 years of The Julian Trust possible.

There was good food, drinks, music and plenty of laughs, along with a few words from our Chairman, Dush, thanking our volunteers for everything they do. We then got stuck into a raffle and quiz, with our DJ keeping the music going throughout the evening. 🎶

A huge thank you to our volunteer party planning committee, who put so much time and effort into organising the evening and bringing everything together. And to our wonderful kitchen helpers, who prepared all of the food, served it throughout the evening and stayed behind to clean everything up - we really couldn’t have done it without you!

It was lovely to have volunteers from across our different teams together, catching up, meeting new faces and enjoying a well-deserved evening away from the shelter.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such a memorable night. Most importantly, thank you to every volunteer who has given their time, energy and kindness over the years. You are the reason we’ve made it to 40 years. 💚

Today marks 40 years of The Julian Trust.

Founded by Meg Grimes in 1986, The Julian Trust has been supporting people experiencing homelessness in Bristol for four decades - offering a hot meal, a shower, clean clothes and a warm welcome.

Reaching 40 years is a milestone we’re incredibly proud of, but it’s also a bittersweet one. We wish there was no longer a need for a service like ours, but sadly, people experiencing homelessness still need our support today.

What we are incredibly proud of is the community that has grown around The Julian Trust over those 40 years. Our amazing volunteers, donors, fundraisers and supporters have given their time, energy and generosity to keep the shelter running and our doors open. 🤝

Whether you’ve been part of The Julian Trust for decades or joined us recently, thank you. Every single person who has contributed has helped us reach this milestone. 💚

Sharing this lovely exchange when Corrine Cooper, Senior Community Investment Manager (South and Greater London) at Places for People went to visit The Julian Trust in St Pauls, Bristol following their nomination to receive a laptop.

The Julian Trust does an incredible job, providing around 80 meals every night, as well as a safe, welcoming alternative to rough sleeping.

Corrine said, "The space is absolutely immaculate and the warmth shown to every guest is clear to see. The shelter work very closely with our Living+ schemes in the homelessness pathway, along with colleagues across Bristol and value these positive relationships."

Thanks to the team at Places for People for nominating this charity helping to tackle homelessness and we hope the extra tech goes a little way in supporting the great work you do.

Just a few of our wonderful Tuesday evening volunteers! 💚

Did you know that each of our teams has a fabulous mix of experience? We have volunteers who have been with us for 1, 5, 10+ years, alongside people who are much newer to the Julian Trust family.

It’s this mix of experience, enthusiasm and fresh perspectives that makes our volunteer teams so special. Everyone brings something different, and together they help keep the shelter running week after week.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers for everything you do!

We wanted to give another special shoutout to one of our amazing supporters, Jack, who has been doing an incredible amount to support the Julian Trust.

Jack and his family recently held a quiz night, which was a fantastic success! 🧠🎉 Alongside matched giving from mum, Donna’s, workplace, he raised an incredible £2,450 for the Julian Trust! 💷🙌

The evening was filled with friendly rivalry, tricky trivia, plenty of laughs and some great vibes - and we’re told there’s even hope of making it an annual event! 😍

And Jack’s generosity doesn’t stop there… Last week, he dropped 20 bags of clothing, including 50 brand-new pairs of boxers, lots of new socks and 20 new T-shirts. 👕🧦🩳

We’re incredibly grateful for Jack’s continued support and his passion for helping people experiencing homelessness. It means so much to us - thank you, Jack (and your wonderful family)! ❤️

And a huge thank you to everyone who continues to support Jack and get behind his fundraising efforts. Your generosity helps Jack make a real difference to people who need our support.
