How can we create more inclusive and fair cities?
It’s a shared question that connects different cities, brings different perspectives into dialogue, and opens up new ways of imagining more inclusive urban futures.
The DUF kickoff and Community Event in Berlin brought together partners from five countries to share research on their colonial histories and explore how these histories continue to shape the urban spaces of Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, Almada and Palermo.
The exchange was insightful and thought-provoking, creating space to share experiences, question dominant narratives and reflect on what decolonisation can look like in practice.
From museum facades and monuments to street names, botanical gardens and plants, the presentations highlighted the many ways colonial histories remain present in our cities. A keynote by Decolonize Berlin brought further perspectives to the discussion.
Decolonising our towns means recognising these traces, questioning whose histories are represented in our public spaces, and working towards cities that better reflect the diverse communities that shape them.
The event underlined the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences across Europe as we work towards a more inclusive future and a shared vision for our cities.
