IMCC Palestine

IMCC Palestine IMCC Palestine and their partnerorganisation Shahed work together in the West Bank to improve health and empower young Palestinians. ideer).

We are based in Copenhagen, at Panum faculty of health sciences - yet we welcome all young citizens to join us! IMCC Palestine is a project group within the organisation IMCC working with health issues in Palestine through capacity building of young Palestinians. The Danish Youth Council funds our project. Up until now we have carried out two fases of our on-going project, a partner identification

and a preparatory study, both with great success and a continuously closer relationship with our Palestinian Partner. Next step is the initiation of a pilot project, that will be conducted through a partner visit in spring 2017. During this visit future steps toward a partner project will be decided upon. As a volunteer group we wish to engage and empower more young voices in the role of civil society and social development debate in order for them to be the driving force behind the change, they wish to see in their community. We work from the natural premise, that our partner is the expert on and in the local context, therefor Danish delegates do not perform clinical or health care work. We do not offer clinical stays or long-term dispatchments to Palestine. We work in a partnership with the Palestinian organisation ’Shahid’ and together we design our projects. Our project visits are usually 2 weeks long giving us the opportunity to work close with our partner. During these visits we exchange and develop ideas carried our by our Palestinian volunteers. When the opportunity is provided Palestinian delegates visits Denmark to attend courses building competences within international cooperation, leadership and organisational development. The majority of our work is taking place in Denmark. Here our work tasks include planning info events on Palestine and the work with human rights in a very special context, writing project applications, communication with partner, project monitoring and evaluation and of course a combination of social events and organisational work. Preventive healthcare and organisational development in Palestine is the main focus, making the projects well suited for students who have an interest in the middle east, health care and organisational work processes.

Just graduated as a medical doctor!

Having carried out parts of my education in the West Bank, I feel compelled to let this moment express deep admiration for Palestinian medical staff.

Doctors and nurses in Gaza are working relentlessly while in mortal danger. One thousand children have been amputated without painkillers. Phosphorous bombs are burning patients’ flesh to the bone, leaving only stumps to heal. While living and sleeping in the operating room, medical personnel are often the last to find out that their own families are lying under the rubble.

Their sacrifice is immense. I’m in awe over the resilience required to keep working to save a patient today who is likely to get killed tomorrow, never knowing when - or if - the occupation will end.

Because no patient is safe under military rule. Wounds can’t heal while suffering from thirst and starvation, as Israel has cracked down on access to water and food. In the West Bank, healthy lives can’t thrive under the threat of child imprisonment, evictions and settlement expansions. Reconciliation can never be made without acknowledging that a hundred years ago, 95% of the population was Arab. Today, after the majority were expelled from their homes, Palestinians are cramped in refugee camps while witnessing the ongoing erasure of their land.

I’m also writing this thinking about my Jewish and Israeli friends. I deeply wish for them to see the hostages return, and to be able to live peaceful, regular lives. The self-determination of Palestinians is not at odds with that peace - it’s a requirement.

Until that’s achieved, the relentless efforts of the medical staff will be crucial to save Gaza, and to one day rebuild it. Their endurance and loyalty to their profession will stand as an inspiration for my future work.
