Gigi Ball began with one woman’s desire to turn her own experience with breast cancer into something that would help other women living with the disease.

Gayle’s family remembers her for her vibrant energy, her humour and her incredible ability to lift others up – even on her worst days. They also remember how, after being diagnosed with breast cancer at 52, Gayle found strength in the hope that she could one day support others navigating a similar journey.

Sadly, Gayle passed away before that dream could become reality.
But today, her legacy lives on through the event her family created in her honour and the funds it will raise to support Sinai Health’s PYNK Program, helping young women with breast cancer access specialized care and support.

The PYNK program is designed to meet the unique health needs of women under 45 diagnosed with breast cancer. Fuelled by donor support, PYNK helps these patients navigate complex decisions about treatment options and fertility, coordinate access to timely care, share relevant resources, and connect them to mental health support when they need it most.

Last year on World Menopause Day, more than 100 people took The Cold Plunge Challenge in support of women's health.

Some cheered from the shoreline. Conversations started between people who had just met. And for one morning, a cold plunge became a way to connect around something much bigger: advancing women’s health.

When Hugh Ralph’s first biopsy didn’t match what his doctors were seeing on his MRI, his care team kept looking.

A second, more targeted biopsy revealed a cancer that needed treatment, setting Hugh on a path that would ultimately lead to robotic surgery at Sinai Health.

Today, researchers are working to make prostate cancer care even more precise, exploring how advanced imaging, biomarkers and emerging AI tools could help identify which cancers need treatment and which don’t.

About six weeks after giving birth to her first child by Caesarean section, Claire began experiencing severe pain around her surgical scar. Some days, it was so debilitating that she struggled to lift her baby.

Her incision had healed well and an ultrasound was normal, but the pain persisted. She was left wondering where to turn.

Claire’s experience reflects a broader challenge: Significant pain during and after pregnancy can be overlooked or minimized as simply part of pregnancy — even when it interferes with work, caregiving and everyday life.

When Claire became pregnant again, she worried about going through the same experience. This time, she was connected early with Dr. Rebecca Titman, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist with Sinai Health’s Pain in Pregnancy Program.

The program brings specialized pain expertise into pregnancy care, helping patients develop individualized strategies before conception, during pregnancy and into the postpartum period. For Claire, that meant anticipating what she might need and having a plan in place.

Ten months after the birth of her son, Claire says her postpartum experience has been dramatically different. “I’m much more functional,” she says. “I haven’t been knocked out of commission for days on end at all.”

For too long, women’s health has been critically under-researched. Just 5 per cent of global research and development funding goes to women’s health — leaving important questions about women’s health unanswered.

For Derek, one of the participants who took on the challenge, that meant completing eight yards — approximately 53 kilometres — before deciding his day was done. Reflecting on the experience, he called it “UNFINISHED business” and is already looking ahead to next year!💪

Amy Milne isn’t just helping bring people together through The Down There Affair charity walk — she's also opening up conversations about often-overlooked women’s health issues through her Down There Aware podcast.

In a recent episode, Amy speaks with Dr. Olga Bougie, a gynaecologist at Mount Sinai Hospital and Head of Research in Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain at Sinai Health, to explore why women living with endometriosis and chronic pain have been historically overlooked and how research is helping improve care.

As researchers uncover more about women's health, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: many aspects of women's health are connected.

Menopause, heart health and autoimmune disease don't exist in isolation; they can influence one another in ways that shape a woman's health throughout her life.

Recognizing these connections, researchers and clinicians at Sinai Health are bringing expertise across programs and specialties together to build a more integrated model of care — one that reflects the complex realities of women's lives.

This new model is helping ensure women are cared for as whole people, not through the lens of a single diagnosis. Philanthropic support is helping accelerate this work, turning new knowledge into better care for women today and for generations to come.
