POGO Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario Childhood cancer is a devastating diagnosis that affects both the child and the entire family.

POGO ensures that all children, youth with cancer, survivors of childhood cancer, and their families in Ontario are given equal access to state-of-the-art cancer care. At POGO (Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario) we give kids with cancer and their families the support they need – not just during the difficult time around therapy, but for years after – when they can face complications from the very treatments that saved their lives. Each year in Ontario, 400 children are diagnosed with cancer and about 4,000 families are currently going through active treatment or follow up care. Many of these families are accessing POGO’s financial assistance program for the unexpected out-of-pocket costs associated with a childhood cancer diagnosis. While 82% of children survive, many will face significant late effects from their disease and treatment. Survivors of brain tumours and other cancers may face learning challenges later in life. POGO counsellors across the province work with these young people to help them match their abilities with their aspirations and take the necessary steps to move on to college or university. POGO also maintains an aggressive research agenda through the POGO Research Unit (PRU). We are asking the types of questions that will benefit these young cancer patients, their families and survivors - in Ontario and around the world – today and well into the future. POGO is committed to putting equity at the heart of everything we do. At the heart of POGO’s mission is our commitment to work in collaboration across Ontario and beyond to ensure everyone affected by childhood cancer has access to the best care and support. We believe diverse perspectives strengthen our ability to deliver on this mission, and that to achieve our vision of excellence requires an environment in which everyone feels welcomed and valued, including our team, and those we serve and with whom we work. We are taking action to:

- Have our organization reflect the diverse community we serve
- Empower people from all backgrounds to do their best work in support of our mission
- Reduce barriers to our programs and services

Congratulations to Dr. Mark Greenberg, co-founder of POGO and renowned pediatric oncologist, on being named a Pearson Centre honouree in recognition of his leadership and lasting contributions to Canadian health care.

Fondly known as Dr. Mark by many, his vision helped fundamentally change how childhood cancer care is delivered in Ontario. From championing a province-wide childhood cancer registry in the 1980s to his decades-long leadership of POGO, he played a pivotal role in building a coordinated system that connects care, data, research and lifelong support for children and youth diagnosed with cancer.

Today, through POGO’s official leadership of childhood cancer care and as advisor to the Government of Ontario, Ontario's childhood cancer care system is recognized as world-class, supporting families from diagnosis, through treatment, into survivorship, and, when needed, end-of-life care.

All of us at POGO are honoured to celebrate this recognition and the extraordinary legacy of a leader whose vision for collaboration, innovation and commitment to better outcomes continues to benefit children, survivors and families in, and beyond, Ontario.

What a month it has been! 💛

Throughout Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, communities across Ontario came together to raise awareness, raise funds for POGO’s vital programs and services, and support kids with cancer, survivors and their families.

From fundraising events and community partnerships to an exciting expansion of care closer to home, September gave us so much to celebrate. ✨

Here are just some of the ways our community showed up:

💛 LINKED for Life participants and donors built a chain of more than 4749 links across Ontario.

💛 The third annual LIVEWell Swing Against Cancer - For Kids was another success, raising $30,000 for POGO.

💛 Kitchener Kids brought the community together for Kitchener Kids with Cancer Run & Walk, raising a record-breaking $143,000.

💛 We celebrated the launch of the new POGO Satellite Clinic at Marotta Family Hospital at Niagara Health, helping bring specialized childhood cancer care closer to home for more children and families in the region.

💛 Kian’s Skate for Childhood Cancer brought the Drayton community and beyond together once again in support of POGO. ⛸️

💛TMX employees came together for the 2nd Annual TMX Ring the Bell, raising over $120,000.

💛 Cupcake Run returned in support of POGO, serving up a sweet way to support kids with cancer and their families. 🧁

And these are only a few of the many ways people showed up this September.

To every participant, donor, fundraiser, partner, volunteer and supporter: thank you. Together, we are continuing to support children with cancer, survivors and families across Ontario beyond Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 💛

Registration is now open for POGO’s Survivor to Survivor (S2S) Network Build a Resumé workshop! 📋

This free virtual series is designed for childhood cancer and brain tumour survivors aged 16+ who want to build confidence, identify their strengths and create a resumé that’s ready for the job search.

Across four one-hour sessions, participants will learn about:
✔️ Making a strong first impression
✔️ Identifying strengths
✔️ Building a professional resumé
✔️ Getting ready to apply

Sessions run Thursdays from 6:00–7:00 p.m. for four consecutive weeks, starting October 22.

Only 8 spots are available, and participants are expected to attend all four sessions.

September may be coming to an end, but for children and families facing childhood cancer, the journey continues.

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we saw incredible support through events, conversations, advocacy and POGO’s LINKED for Life campaign.

Together, you helped shine a light on an important truth: childhood cancer doesn’t just affect a child. It affects the whole family.

Childhood cancer reaches far beyond a diagnosis. It impacts school, work, finances, mental health, family routines and everyday moments that many of us take for granted.

That’s why POGO’s work extends beyond treatment and beyond hospital walls. When a child in Ontario is diagnosed with cancer, we’re there and we stay, helping connect children, survivors and families to the care, resources and support they need throughout their journey.

Awareness month may be ending, but our commitment to Ontario’s childhood cancer community remains.

We’re proud to announce our 10th POGO Satellite Clinic, with the expansion of childhood cancer care closer to home at Marotta Family Hospital at Niagara Health.

Thanks to collaboration with McMaster Children's Hospital and Niagara Health, children receiving cancer treatment in the Niagara region will be able to access more specialized care closer to home.

What does that mean for families? For Brett Wales and his family, it would have meant hundreds fewer hours travelling for care during his son Reed's treatment.

"For 108 weeks, our family made the trip from Niagara Falls to Hamilton for Reed's treatment. Those weekly appointments added up to more than 18,000 kilometres and 270 hours on the road. When your child has cancer, every hour matters.”

This September, colourful LINKED for Life chains have been growing at POGO Satellite Clinics across Ontario. When families walk in and see them, they know they’re not alone; each paper link represents someone in the wider community standing with children and families affected by childhood cancer.

The last day of treatment is a milestone worth celebrating. For childhood cancer survivors, it’s also the start of a new chapter.

Four in five childhood cancer survivors are at risk of at least one serious chronic condition, including heart disease and cognitive challenges. POGO AfterCare Clinics help catch late effects early and build healthy lives long after cancer.

Surviving childhood cancer is only part of the journey. Building a future after treatment is the next. 

POGO School and Work Counsellors help survivors navigate school accommodations, apply for scholarships and programs, plan their education and careers, and push through setbacks. When survivors feel like they have no voice, their POGO Counsellor speaks up for them.

In his video, Imo shares how his POGO Counsellor has helped him, and why he’s supporting LINKED for Life. The campaign was created by survivors, for survivors, and helps fund the supports that make a future after cancer possible.
