Canadian Death Race winner to speak at Central Library

What does it take to win an ultra-endurance trail race and then turn around and win one of the world's toughest ultramarathons?

Saskatoon runner Mandy Currie will talk about her successes on Wednesday, Sept 9 at an event hosted by Regina Public Library and Run Regina/Queen City Marathon.

Currie won the 2026 Hikuri 81K race in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a race covering roughly 81 to 100 km with an elevation gain of 3,500 to 3,900 meters. The win qualified her to enter the prestigious Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) finals in Chamonix, France. A few months later, she ran through 118 km of wind and snow to win the Canadian Death Race in Grande Cache, AB, scaling three mountain summits, a 4,200-foot plateau, and a major river crossing at Hell's Gate canyon.

Currie began by running down Saskatchewan roads before discovering trail running and pushing her limits on rougher terrain and longer distances. She uses it as an outlet to cope with personal struggles including the recent death of her sister.

“Mandy is an incredible example of someone who has persevered and triumphed through difficult circumstances,” Nancy MacKenzie, Executive Director, Customer Experience at Regina Public Library said, “We’re delighted to be able to offer the chance to learn from her at her upcoming talk.”

Mandy’s talk will be held in advance of the Queen City Marathon events on September 11 to 13.

“We’re excited to hear from Saskatchewan’s own Mandy Currie,” Shawn Weimer, Executive Director of Run Regina said, “Her journey to conquer both the trails and personal grief during her ascent to become one of our province’s premier trail runners is one that will inspire everyone.”
