Shared gear = shared risk
Some of the biggest biosecurity risks when travelling with horses aren’t the horses, but the shared equipment we don’t think twice about.

During our summer outings, biosecurity can slip when horses:
1. nibble on cross‑ties in a shared wash station
2. use a stall that has not been disinfected since the last occupant
3. are handled right after another horse, without hand cleaning in between

Pathogens don’t need horse‑to‑horse contact. They can move quietly between hands, hoses, and equipment.

As the summer travel season approaches, now is the time to think about practical, everyday biosecurity.

The Sickness Prevention in Horses On‑Demand Course .ca is based on Canada’s Equine Biosecurity standard and provides strategies to reduce disease risk while travelling, boarding, or attending events.

There's more than you think to trailer safety! Most trailering problems do not start on the road.

They begin with small decisions made beforehand, often without realizing the risk they introduce. From overlooked maintenance issues to equipment mismatches and unrealistic expectations of how a horse travels, many safety concerns remain invisible until something goes wrong.
How does a horse travel? Horses do not stand passively in a moving trailer. They are constantly shifting their weight to stay balanced, responding to acceleration, braking, turns, and uneven road surfaces. Understanding how horses stabilize themselves in motion changes how we think about driving habits, trailer setup, and overall trip planning.

For those who haul horses, hire transport services, or share responsibility for equine travel, this knowledge is not optional. It is foundational.
Equine Guelph’s Horse Trailer Safety online course, led by large animal emergency rescue expert Dr. Rebecca Husted, brings these often‑overlooked realities together in one practical learning experience.

Course runs May 4–15, 2026 - Still Time to Sign-up for 50% off Discount!
