Listen to what Kelsey Ronn has to say about her experience participating in music festivals.

Meet Kelsey Ronn, winner of the Wallis Memorial Opera Competition in 2026!

“Since age five, I participated in music festivals. As an imaginative and high-spirited kid, I benefited greatly from having musical outlets such as the Saskatoon and Saskatchewan Music Festivals. The preparation alone to participate in festivals taught me how to set goals and become self-disciplined. Although practicing was grueling at times, I reaped the rewards when I committed to it. I appreciated the feedback from every guest adjudicator each year. In fact, I would not have moved to Winnipeg to pursue my music degree without a festival connection I made one particular year. Now, I am a former Calgary Opera McPhee Artist with a MMus. from McGill University and a BMus. from the University of Manitoba.”

The Regina Music Festival was an incredibly formative part of my upbringing, shaping the musician and community member I am today. As a young musician, it was one of the first places where I discovered that connecting with others was my favourite part of making music. This sense of community I found through the festival continues to influence my life and work. Today, as a Certified Music Therapist (MTA), choral director, chorister, and performer, I have the privilege of contributing to that same community and creating opportunities for others to experience the joy, belonging, and shared purpose that music can bring. I am immensely grateful for these gifts, nurtured through my experiences at the festival, and I hope to see the organization continue to grow for the benefit of the next generation of musicians.
