Feature Flower Friday!
This week, our feature flower is Cyclamen!
Cyclamen is a genus of perennial flowering plants in the Primrose family (Primulaceae) that contains 23 species and is native to Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, with one species in Somalia.
Cyclamen plants grow from a tuber, and some species have a reversed life cycle. Specifically, the plant begins growing in the autumn, flowers through the winter, dies back in the spring, and then is dormant through the summer. This atypical life cycle is likely an adaptation that helps the plant survive the hot, dry Mediterranean summers.
With their variegated leaves and showy flowers, cyclamen are a beautiful addition to your outdoor flower beds or indoor houseplant collection. If planning to grow outside as a perennial, be sure to get a variety that is winter hardy to your area.
In the wild, several cyclamen species are of conservation concern due to climate change and unsustainable harvesting for the horticultural trade. Ensure you are not part of the problem, and only buy plants that have been propagated in a nursery, and not those harvested from the wild.
There are several different varieties of cyclamen dotted throughout the current display - come see how many of these little beauties you can find!..
