Georgian Bay Biosphere - GBB We are a UNESCO World Biosphere in a freshwater archipelago & charity working for future generations.

The Georgian Bay Biosphere is a non-profit organization working to protect and enhance the natural and cultural resources of Eastern Georgian Bay through environmental stewardship, community education and sustainable development activities. Recognized by UNESCO as a world Biosphere Reserve, this ecologically unique region contains the world’s largest freshwater archipelago and is home to a diverse

range of plant and animal species. Focusing on sustainable community development and the conservation of biodiversity, the Georgian Bay Biosphere is committed to balancing the needs and aspirations of communities with those of the surrounding ecosystem, for a healthy and sustainable Georgian Bay. Our biosphere region covers 347,000 hectares of shoreline ecosystem stretching from the Severn River to the French River. It contains over 100 species of animals and plants that are at risk in Canada and Ontario, including unique reptiles and amphibians. These tiny tracking devices will help collect information on how these unique creatures travel from Canada to Mexico each year.

It may be end of August, but summer isn't over! 🤞🏻🌞

Our adventurous August included 500 hectares of habitat mapped, 1700 kg of invasive species removed, 300+ people educated on turtle conservation, 23 outer island campsites cleaned, 83 pounds of produce donated, and 2,000 baby turtles released!

Watch your step! Our staff recently spotted this imperial moth caterpillar crawling across the ground. 🐛

These moths are a wide-ranging species, their caterpillars can grow up to 10 cm long and are green or brown with light-coloured spots and hairlike spines.

Adult moths are light yellow with pinkish, orangish, or purplish-brown blotches, living for only a week or two—just long enough to find a mate and lay eggs for the next generation!

Spotted on Georgian Bay this week! 👀

Sandhill cranes are a marvellous bird known for their loud, trumpeting, bugling calls that can be heard from kilometers away! These birds travel north during summer, using Georgian Bay and beyond as breeding grounds, migrating to southern United States and Mexico for the winter months. 🌎
