Cyclocross has a long history in Alberta. In the early days, races and courses were more grassroots, with events taking place in places like Kinsmen Park and Mill Creek Ravine in Edmonton.

In 1980, Alberta sent one of its early cyclocross teams to the Canadian Championships in Marmora, Ontario. Below is an excerpt from the Alberta Bicycle Association’s March 1981 newsletter, the first edition of the year, offering a glimpse into Alberta’s early days of cyclocross racing:

THE 1980 CYCLOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP

Gary Altwasser, Jim Holtz, Roy Merritt, Peter Toth and Peter Gelinas, represented Alberta in the Canadian Cyclocross Championship held in Marmora Ontario.

The race was run in the west part of the town on Sunday November 30th and organized by Dave Vini a local active cyclist.

The race was over 10 laps of a 1.5 km circuit with all classifications (Seniors, Juniors, Women and Vets) run together. Slight pushing at the first corner was the only problem which resulted from this mass start.

Holtz, Merritt, Gelinas and a few Ontario riders ran their bikes to the first corner, avoiding most of the packing.

Early in the race the Alberta riders had good positions and no trouble, but later on Toth crashed twice, once in the creek, and again on a dangerous rock-laced path where most of the other crashes occured. Peter ended up with minor lacerations.

Altwasser and Gelinas suffered punctures in the last leg of the race, draining their energy and killing their hopes for a good finish position.

Holtz and Merritt were "dynamite" at the start - however they went straight on, and not right, at the first corner and lost time. They made hot pursuit and slowly gained on the pack.

The Alberta team was considered unknown. Some said, "We are outclassed". Others "We didn't have a chance."

I think we scared alot of people with our skills and endurance. But we lacked aggression. So next year - who knows?

Every great race day starts with people who show up before the sun does.

From commissaires and timers to organizers, volunteers, course crews, officials, and event staff, Event Excellence is the people behind the race.

They’re the ones setting up courses, checking registrations, managing results, keeping athletes safe, answering questions, solving problems, and making sure the event runs smoothly from the first arrival to the final finish.

This season, Alberta will have 72 days of racing across 43 events, and we’re not done yet! With six races still to come, there are plenty more start lines, finish lines, and early mornings ahead.

Before we get there, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who has contributed their time, expertise, energy, and weekends to Alberta cycling this season.
