🤝Four of Alberta’s largest environmental organizations have come together to raise the alarm about the impact three draft government sub-regional plans — that cover almost one-fifth of the province — will have on the future of the iconic woodland caribou.

🦌Woodland caribou in Alberta continue to be profoundly harmed due to industry-caused habitat loss. The Government of Alberta released the Red Earth, Caribou Mountains, and Berland draft SRPs for public engagement without the evidence needed to demonstrate how woodland caribou conservation and recovery will be achieved.

🪲Step into a world that is all around us, but rarely seen.

📸Join Edmonton based nature photographer and conservation communicator explorewithdara for the launch of his new book, Tiny Titans: The Silent Keepers of Our Ecosystem. Drawing on six years of photography across four continents, Dara will share extraordinary close up images and stories that reveal the beauty, complexity and importance of insects and other overlooked creatures.

🗣The evening will also feature a conversation with Dr. John Acorn, who wrote the foreword for Tiny Titans, Professor Felix Sperling, Professor Maya Evenden and Associate Professor Carol Frost from the University of Alberta. Together, they’ll explore the vital roles insects play in our ecosystems, why these creatures are so often misunderstood, and how photography, science and storytelling can help change the way we see the natural world.

🍂Last weekend Nature Alberta hosted guided programs for some of our community partner organizations as part of our Fall Migration Festival. Participants enjoyed the beautiful fall weather while going on tours of the Strathcona Wilderness Centre, a closeup look at a live bird of prey with Geoff Holroyd of Beaverhill Bird Observatory - BBO, and birdwatching at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park.

📣Nature Alberta is looking for an enthusiastic team member who is passionate about sharing their love of nature with others to help our Nature Kids and NatureHood program inspire the next generation of conservationists.

🌸Funding for this position has been supplied through Nature Canada's Work to Grow program to connect racialized youth to jobs that promote and protect nature. This 16-week internship will support our Family Nature Walks, Christmas Bird Count for Kids, Winter Bug Count and teachers’ convention booths and will provide valuable experience for the successful candidate.

🪽During October, small but reliable numbers of northern gull species pass through Alberta, including Short-billed Gulls like this one. Many individuals of this species seen in the province are immature birds in their first-winter plumage, and telling them apart from the more common Ring-billed Gulls can be tricky. The round head, small narrow bill, and smudgy grey-brown plumage are clues to look for.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day and all days, Nature Alberta acknowledges that the province we care so much for lies within the territories of Treaties 6, 7, and 8, as well as portions of Treaties 4 and 10. This is the ancestral homeland and traditional territory of many First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples who have been stewards of the land, water, and creatures that inhabit them since time immemorial. We are grateful to work with and learn from our Indigenous friends and partners to help care for and preserve nature for generations to come.
