⚠️The Government of Alberta has released three new draft Sub-regional Plans (SRPs) for Caribou Mountains, Red Earth and Berland - landscapes that are already heavily disturbed and provide important habitat for threatened woodland caribou. The Red Earth and Caribou Mountains plans also have implications for wood bison recovery.

🌸Nature Alberta, together with the Alberta Wilderness Association and CPAWS Northern Alberta, is concerned that the draft plans do not provide sufficient protection for the remaining habitat caribou and bison need to survive and recover. Protecting functional habitat that remains must be a central part of recovery, not something left to restoration decades from now.

We are honoured to share that Dr. Lu Carbyn's article "The Ancient Ritual: Wolves and Bison in Wood Buffalo National Park" has been selected as an Alberta Magazine Publishers Association Awards finalist in the Alberta Story category.

His article submission to the Winter 2025 Nature Alberta Magazine is truly an Alberta story. Nowhere else in the world do wolves and bison share such an ancient and uniquely co-dependent relationship. In Wood Buffalo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lu’s vivid account of his experience offers Albertans a rare glimpse into a world few will ever witness firsthand. It is a tribute to what he describes as an “ancient ritual of death and survival in the wilds of our province.”
