On Wednesday evening at the Health PEI Annual General Meeting, PEI Nurses' Union President Kim Sears posed a question asking for targets and timelines for the reduction of private, for-profit agency nurses in our system. Health PEI's response explained why we are relying on these agencies more and more each year, but failed to provide targets or timelines on the reduction of this spending.
Kim followed up to hold Health PEI accountable for a plan to reduce this rapidly rising spending in our healthcare system. This is a problem that isn't specific to one leadership team or government— it has been decades in the making and we need to work together to find a solution.
Following Kim's response, Health PEI CEO Laurae Kloschinsky and Health Minister Hon. Cory Deagle both committed to future conversations with PEINU about potential targets and timelines and the exploration of creative solutions to this problem. We look forward to holding them to this commitment and working together for a better future for our union members, our healthcare system, and Islanders.
