🔥 Shoutout to our CFD FireFit Team! 🔥

Firefighters Barch, Martin, MacDonald and Wonnacott competed in FireFit last weekend, participating both individually and as a team.

The team came home with:

🥇 Gold – 65+ Division
🥇 Gold – Best Rookie Time
🥉 Bronze – Team Competition

All four competitors are now heading to FireFit Nationals in Fredericton next week!

🚒 Charlottetown’s Growth Must Include Fire Protection

Charlottetown is on pace for approximately 1,100 calls in 2026. As our city grows, the number of firefighters on duty and ready to respond must grow with it.

We appreciate Interim Fire Chief Tim Jenkins publicly acknowledging the increasing demands on our fire service and the need to discuss additional career staffing. We agree, and we’re ready for that conversation.

We also agree that having career staff in District 2 is necessary. With its fully functional kitchen, showers, gym, and ability to accomodate up to 15 firefighters overnight, Station 2 itself is no obstacle.

As we’ve consistently advocated, four firefighters should be the baseline for immediate professional response, and it could be implemented today.

The need has been identified. Let’s work together on the solution. 🚒

🔥 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 🚒

Early this afternoon Engine 1 and its crew of three firefighters responded to a reported fire at a local hospital in Charlottetown. 🏥

With only three firefighters on the apparatus, the two interior firefighters quickly went to work carrying a high-rise hose pack, forcible entry tools, a fire extinguisher, thermal imaging camera, and all of their required PPE.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Once the crew located the source of the problem, it was determined to be a minor issue. Thankfully, it was caught quickly. Had it gone unnoticed, the outcome could have been much different.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹.

This response is another example of why adequate staffing matters. When an emergency happens in a hospital, apartment building, school, or home, there is no time to wait for additional resources before getting to work.

Charlottetown continues to grow, and the demands placed on its fire service continue to grow with it.

Charlottetown needs to increase firefighter staffing and commit to a minimum of four firefighters on frontline fire apparatus.

Four firefighters isn't excessive staffing. It's about giving crews the people they need to safely and effectively do the job when seconds count.

More firefighters. Safer crews. Safer community.

🚒 Thinking About Serving Your Community?

Charlottetown’s municipal election is an opportunity for residents who care about their community to step forward and get involved.

Decisions made around the council table directly affect fire protection, public safety and the services residents depend on. We need engaged elected officials who will listen, ask questions and act when improvements are needed.

PEI Municipal Affairs is offering free information sessions for anyone considering municipal politics, including a Charlottetown session September 24 at the Charlottetown Library.

Different emergencies require different tools, equipment, and capabilities.

One of the specialized tools available to protect our community is our 100' Pierce Velocity Aerial Ladder. Its reach and versatility give firefighters options that a standard engine simply cannot provide, including:

🚒 Elevated rescues
🏢 Access to upper floors and rooftops
🪓 Roof and ventilation operations
💦 Elevated master stream operations
🔥 Access and positioning at larger or complex incidents

But having the equipment is only part of the equation. It takes firefighters to put it to work.

Our aerial ladder is not a regularly staffed apparatus. When it is needed, it relies on responding on-call firefighters or, at times, must be cross-staffed using members from an already short-handed career shift of just 3 firefighters.

That creates a difficult reality: moving firefighters to the aerial can mean taking them away from another apparatus or another critical fireground task.

A growing city needs more than the right equipment. It needs enough firefighters available to operate that equipment when seconds count.

4 Firefighters 4 Your Safety is about ensuring our frontline apparatus have the staffing needed to respond effectively, perform critical tasks simultaneously, and make full use of the equipment our community has invested in.

The ladder can reach 100 feet.

But it can't operate itself.

A great day celebrating one of Prince Edward Island’s longest-standing traditions at the Gold Cup and Saucer Parade! 🚒🐎

Members of the Charlottetown Professional Firefighters Association were proud to take part in this year’s parade, alongside a special piece of our department’s history, our 1929 American LaFrance.

Events like the Gold Cup and Saucer Parade are a great opportunity for our members to connect with the community we proudly serve while celebrating the history and traditions of Charlottetown.

A special thank you to Acting Fire Prevention Officer Reynolds for taking this on and putting in the time and effort to help bring everything together.

We’d also like to thank everyone who contributed their time and effort to preparing for the parade and making the day a success.

It takes a team, and we’re proud to represent the Charlottetown Fire Department and our community.

🔥 That’s a wrap on the 58th IAFF Convention!

Proud of our Local 5219 members, DVP Chris Ross and delegates from across the 15th District for representing our members and communities so well.

We heard from political and labour leaders who stand with firefighters, debated and passed important resolutions, and learned from leading experts on occupational cancer and disease, including IAFF’s Dr. Danny Wu, Dr. Derek Urwin and Neil McMillan.

A proud District 15 moment was seeing Fredericton Fire Fighters' Association Local 1053 President Barry Durling receive the IAFF 15th District Leadership Award.

Congratulations to DVPs Ricky Walsh and Danny Todd on their upcoming retirements, and DVPs-elect Chad Major and Tim Hoover as they prepare to take on their new roles.

Next stop, Cleveland 2028, followed by Calgary Firefighters 2030! Congratulations to Local 255 on the successful bid. 🇨🇦

🔥 Days 2 & 3 at the 58th IAFF Convention

Two powerful days of business, debate, solidarity and remembrance.

Highlights included a moving 25th anniversary tribute to 9/11, and strong messages from labour leaders Sara Nelson and John Samuelsen.

Proud to see Atlantic Canada represented on the convention floor, including Halifax Local 268 President Brendan Meagher, and St. John’s Local 1075 Brother Karl Langer, who honoured fallen Brothers Jimmy O’Toole and Craig Quigley.

Congratulations as well to Alex Forrest on his well-deserved IAFF Canadian Trustee Emeritus status.

🔥 for Arlington!! 🔥

Charlottetown Professional Firefighters are on scene in Arlington, Texas for the 58th Biennial IAFF Convention, proudly hosted by Arlington Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1329! 🇨🇦🇺🇸

IAFF members from across Canada and the United States have come together to help shape the future of our profession and our union. Delegates will review, debate, and vote on resolutions, constitutional amendments, and other important matters affecting our members and their families.

The convention kicked off with an amazing opening ceremony, including a moving tribute honouring our active and retired brothers and sisters who have passed since the last convention, including those lost in the line of duty. Their service, sacrifice, and legacy will never be forgotten.

We were also proud to receive a shout-out from IAFF General President Edward A. Kelly for the launch of our 4 Firefighters 4 Your Safety campaign back home in Charlottetown!

When we fight, we win! ✊🔥
