Johnston Canyon is Closing from October 13 until late November, and for once nobody will be queuing on the catwalks.
Parks Canada crews are moving in to scale the rock above the trail, remove debris and install rock bolts. They will also re-tighten the existing bolts, which is the sort of job nobody notices until it goes undone.
The closure covers the P1 car park, the washrooms and the trail up to the Upper Falls Lower Viewpoint. Roam Route 9 is suspended as well, so the bus is no help.
The Ink Pots are still reachable, just not through the front door. Parks Canada points people to the Moose Meadows Trail, about two kilometres west of the canyon. Parking there is limited, so arriving at 10 am on a fine Saturday will be an act of optimism.
Late November is a target, not a promise. Anyone who remembers how long the Banff Upper Hot Springs closure dragged on will plan accordingly.

⚠️ Upcoming Johnston Canyon Trail Closure

Beginning October 13, 2026, temporary closures will be in place at Johnston Canyon to support essential rock slope remediation work.

During this work:
• The Johnston Canyon Trail from the parking lot trailhead to both the Lower and Upper Falls viewpoints will be closed.
• The Johnston Canyon P1 parking lot, washrooms, and parking facilities will be unavailable.
• The Upper Falls and Ink Pots will remain accessible via the Moose Meadows Trail.

The work will help maintain visitor safety in the area.

Please plan ahead and respect all closure signage. Thank you for your cooperation while this important safety work is completed.

Cougar warning at Sheep River - should they have closed the trails?
A carcass has been found on the Meadow and Loggers loops near Sandy McNabb. Alberta Parks issued a warning yesterday, but the trails are still open.
Some will say that's fair enough. Cougars live all over Kananaskis, and if every sign of one closed a trail, there wouldn't be many left to walk.
Others will say a carcass is different. Cougars usually come back to a kill, so you know roughly where one might be. 🐾
And these aren't remote routes. They're the easy family loops, busy with dogs and kids.
If you do go:
Dog on a leash, kids close, walk in a group.
If you see a cougar, don't run. Face it, look big and back away slowly.
If it comes at you, fight back.
