Bike Calgary statement on Ontario bike lane decision:

Bike Calgary is disappointed by the decision from the Ontario Court of Appeal, which allows the provincial government to proceed with the removal or reconfiguration of protected bike lanes on major Toronto streets.

While the decision resolves a legal question, it does not change the importance of safe cycling infrastructure.

Protected bike lanes are an important part of safe, healthy and connected communities. They provide people with a way to travel by bicycle that is separated from motor vehicle traffic, making cycling a more comfortable and accessible option for people of different ages and abilities.

That matters because cycling is more than recreation. People ride bikes to get to work and school, run errands, visit friends and family, and simply enjoy their communities. When people feel safe cycling, more people are able to choose active transportation, which benefits individual health, community connections and the environment.

The evidence supporting safe, separated cycling infrastructure is substantial. Removing it should not be treated simply as a question of road space or traffic flow. Decisions about our streets should consider the safety and well-being of everyone who uses them.

Bike Calgary stands with Cycle Toronto and others advocating for safe, connected cycling networks in Toronto and across Ontario. We hope decision-makers will continue to consider the evidence and the needs of the communities they serve.

Calgary can learn from what is happening in Toronto. As our city continues to grow, we should be looking for opportunities to build a transportation network where more people can safely choose to walk, roll, cycle, drive or take transit.

Safe streets are good for everyone.

Today, Bike Calgary joined the Coalition to Reduce Auto Size Hazards (C.R.A.S.H) and provincial road safety partners in urging the Chief Medical Examiner of Alberta to investigate the disproportionate risks posed by large pick-ups and SUVs to cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, and recommend measures to improve safety.

In case you haven't heard, Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen wants to remove bike lanes and stop new ones from being built.

Make sure to contact Minister Dreeshen at 780 427-2080 or [email protected] and let him know what your thoughts are.

Hey Calgary, it’s Neighbour Day on Saturday. We’ve got free cake and $500 of prizes to give away. Stop by our table on 15 Ave SW cycle track. Between 10:30am and noon, we’ll be at one of the intersections between MacLeod Trail and 11 St SW. But, shhh! The exact intersection will be a surprise!

Hey Calgary! Bike Month continues with more pop-up celebrations and prize draws. This Saturday morning (June 20), we’re celebrating the opening of the 15 Ave SW cycle track. If you’re in the area, come by for free cake, enter into a draw for some great prizes from Ridleys Cycle, and fill out postcards to provincial Minister of Transportation Devin Dreeshen telling him why you love safe routes like this! We’ll be there from around 10:30am till noon.

The exact intersection will be a surprise, so make sure to pedal the whole length from Victoria Park / Stampede Station on MacLeod Trail in the east to 11 St SW in the west! It’s a flat 2km from end to end, so take your time to enjoy the ride.
