We extend our sincere condolences and support to everyone affected by yesterday’s tragic collision in northeast Calgary. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, those who were injured and everyone impacted by this devastating event.
This was an exceptionally challenging incident for first responders. Our crews arrived to find multiple injured patients, a trapped bus driver and a transit bus on fire. Firefighters immediately began simultaneous rescue, firefighting and patient care operations, working to knock down the fire, stabilize and extricate the trapped driver, support patient care, and manage the hazards associated with the burning transit bus.
Our Technical Rescue Team carried out the advanced extrication of the trapped driver, working closely with Emergency Health Services, while Hazardous Materials specialists later worked with Calgary Transit to assess the bus’s compressed natural gas system and ensure there was no ongoing risk to responders or the public.
Throughout the incident, Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police Service, Emergency Health Services, Calgary Transit and 9-1-1 communications worked together under extremely difficult circumstances to provide the highest level of service possible.
We acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of our firefighters and all responding personnel, as well as the teamwork demonstrated across agencies during this complex and tragic incident.
As investigations continue into how and why this incident unfolded, our thoughts remain with everyone affected in the days, weeks and months ahead.
