HomeSpace is on a mission to increase the number of affordable and specialized housing units in Calgary

In 2003, HomeSpace Society (formerly Calgary Community Land Trust Society) was created to fill a need in our community. That need is to significantly increase access to affordable housing and advance community–based planning and delivery of housing options, specifically to vulnerable populations. HomeSpace exists to support social agencies’ access to safe, appropriate and affordable housing for vu

lnerable populations in our city. We own a portfolio of over 750 units of housing in 24 communities throughout Calgary and we work with agencies who provide supports to vulnerable Calgarians in need of housing. HomeSpace is also a property developer, building specialized permanent housing in order to continually add to the affordable housing stock in our city. Meet our partner Recovery Alberta!

Recovery Alberta Addiction and Mental Health Supportive Living is a Calgary Corridor team that provides recovery-oriented care to Calgarians in a variety of service settings. They support a variety of transitional housing programs for clients to ensure they are recieving the right care, in the right environment, at the right time.

Their Addiction and Mental Health Supportive Living team works in our building in Thorncliffe to support tenants with mental wellness, recovery, skill building, and fostering connections in the Calgary community.

At HomeSpace, we’re building more than housing. We’re creating pathways to stability, dignity, and community.

From our newly opened 52 transitional family townhomes in Whitehorn, to 45 new family homes coming to Evergreen, we’re expanding options for families at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

We’re also transforming Calgary’s underused spaces into affordable housing, with 65 new non-market homes planned at 1000 8th Ave, while developing 56 units of permanent supportive housing with 24/7 on-site supports for people transitioning out of chronic homelessness.

Together with our community and service partners, we’re working to create homes where Calgarians can build a more stable future.

Welcome to the HomeSpace board, James!

With more than 30 years of experience in land and property development, James Scott has held technical, leadership, and executive roles across both the development and consulting sectors. His expertise spans land planning, regulatory approvals, development feasibility, project management, community master planning, and urban redevelopment, with a primary focus on the Calgary region and Bow Valley. As an Alberta Registered Professional Planner and member of the Canadian Institute of Planners, he has a strong track record of leading complex residential, mixed-use, and commercial projects while navigating municipal and provincial planning frameworks.

Passionate about sustainable urban redevelopment and community-building, James has built and led high-performing teams, fostered cross-functional collaboration, and championed innovative approaches to land reuse and climate resilience. He has also contributed extensively to civic leadership through volunteer roles, including serving on the Calgary Planning Commission, the Calgary Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, and the Calgary Hotel Association.

This International Youth Day we would like to highlight our family townhome project in Evergreen, where we will be building 45 2 & 3-bedroom townhomes, 10 accessible units and a 4,305-resident building with office, programming, and amenity spaces for family and agency use.

These will be more than just homes. They are a chance for families and youth to gain support and create long-lasting stability.

Until the end of August, this project is being further supported by Rogers Birdies for Kids presented by Altalink - helping us raise funds to strengthen our community and provide much-needed housing for families.

Over the past 10 years, HomeSpace has grown alongside a rapidly evolving affordable housing sector.

What began as a small portfolio has evolved into housing for more than 1,500 Calgarians throughout the city. Along the way, we've responded to rising housing need, built new partnerships, and adapted our approach, all while continuing to build homes for those who need them most.

Welcome to the HomeSpace board, Amanda!

Amanda Wright is a seasoned financial executive and Chartered Professional Accountant with over a decade of experience driving organizational success in Calgary’s public and private sectors.

Most recently, Amanda served as Chief Financial Officer at University of Calgary Properties Group (“UCPG”), where she played a pivotal role in the financial management and strategic growth of landmark projects University District and University Innovation Quarter. There, Amanda led cross-functional teams overseeing finance, HR, IT, safety, and administration, fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence.

Prior to joining UCPG, Amanda spent 13 years at Deloitte, where she began her career as a Staff Accountant and steadily advanced to the role of Senior Manager in the Private, Audit and Assurance team. During her tenure, she specialized in private equity, construction, and real estate, further broadening her industry expertise.

Outside of her professional life, Amanda values time with her family and actively contributes to causes that strengthen Calgary’s future. She is recognized for her collaborative leadership style, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to helping organizations achieve their full potential.

Meet our partner New Age Services!

New Age Services Inc. has been providing supports within Calgary to adults with disabilities since 1991. They are PDD funded and support individuals who may experience complex medical and/or behavioural challenges, as well as varying disabilities. Their key support models include group living homes, supported living, supported independent living, in home respite, out of home respite, and community access.

New Age Services provides 24/7 supports to our residents in Legacy on 5th, our 74-unit building in the downtown west end.

By working in collaboration, HomeSpace can continue to increase the supply of affordable housing while partners like New Ages Services ensure our residents have the support they need to feel safe and stable in their lives.

Now that families are settling into their new homes in Whitehorn, we're excited to see every part of the site come to life, especially the new playground. 🤸‍♀️

From the beginning, we intentionally designed the outdoor areas to encourage play, connection, and community right on site. Along with a basketball court, we built a high-quality playground that current and future children living at Whitehorn can enjoy.

Because this community is designed for Indigenous families, the playground features Indigenous-inspired play elements that help foster a sense of recognition and belonging for children.

This playground was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Calgary Foundation through the Community Grants Program and YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) a through the Community Facility Enhancement Program. Thank you for helping create a space where children can play and families can connect for generations to come.

Here is our 2025-26 impact by the numbers!

As we celebrate 10 years of HomeSpace, every number tells a story, and together, they paint a bigger picture of what affordable housing makes possible.

Since 2016, HomeSpace has grown to owning and operating 979 homes across 36 properties in all four quadrants of Calgary, providing stable housing for more than 1,500 residents.

Those numbers are made possible through partnership. By developing and managing affordable housing, HomeSpace enables our 21 social service partners to focus on providing wrap-around supports that help our residents build stable, fulfilling lives.

On average, rents in HomeSpace buildings are 51% below market rate, giving residents the opportunity to remain housed while prioritizing other essential needs like food, healthcare, and education.
