Calgarians are feeling lonelier than during the pandemic according to our 2025 Quality of Life report. But small, local projects can make a big difference.

Fauzia Khedri noticed how language barriers were isolating Afghan and other newcomer women. She started the Immigrant Learning Mums Society, offering workshops in languages women understand – helping them build confidence, learn new skills, and feel more at home in their communities.

Projects like this show how a grassroots idea can build connection. Neighbour Grants offers up to $10,000 for projects that help people feel they belong in their communities.

Our Strategic Opportunity Grants program is taking a little June break and won’t be accepting applications this month, but we’ll be back in July when applications reopen. Submissions received in July will be reviewed in August, so get those ideas ready!

Belonging grows when people feel seen, heard, and able to share their perspectives.

A recent project from Spectrum Promising Association and Autism Calgary did just that. Youth created artwork that was printed on tote bags to spark conversations about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and neurodiversity.
