FearIsNotLove

FearIsNotLove FearIsNotLove. These four words share perhaps the most important thing you need to know about us. It’s who we are. And it’s what we stand for. Ever.

Neglect, violence and abuse are life-altering, terrorizing behaviours. They are never ‘okay’. No matter what the ‘past history’ or ‘what you did.’

We call attention to the behaviours that lead partners and family members to not feel safe to be who they are, to feel afraid to speak their minds, and to feel terrified in their own homes. This can happen to anyone - regardless of how strong, intelli

gent, capable, educated, resilient or successful they are. Our goal is to help people to have violence-free lives, to live without fear, and get to the ultimate outcome - love. It’s what we all want and need. Please come to us for help and support if you’re afraid, or if others are afraid of you. Every human has the right to feel safe, respected, supported and loved. FearIsNotLove is:

⚫ A call to action
⚫ A value statement
⚫ Something we believe people are willing to stand up for.
⚫ And a standard that everyone, especially young people, can use to assess the health of their close relationships. It’s time to change the conversation. Now, many more people impacted by neglect, violence and abuse will recognize that they can find help here. It’s time to start new conversations, open up fresh possibilities, and tackle the unfair assumptions, embarrassment and shame that have been attached to domestic violence and abuse for too long. FearIsNotLove is about more than just our agency alone. We work alongside strong, capable partners. Our collective impact is much greater than we can hope to achieve by ourselves. We have evolved from our beginnings as Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, and we are catalyzing a movement for social change. At FearIsNotLove, we welcome everyone to join us on this bold path forward to open up new possibilities and new conversations in Calgary and area. As innovative and responsive leaders, we continue to evolve based on the latest research and evidence to meet the needs of our ever-changing community. We remain grounded in the same foundations you have come to know and love. Yes, the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter is a core program and an integral part of what we offer. We believe people who use abuse can change

Domestic violence and abuse are behaviours. And we believe that people’s behaviours can change, given the right motivation, resources, support and understanding. That’s why we also support people who are concerned they may have hurt someone, or are struggling with anger issues. Recently, our community members captured who we really are. Thank you.

⚫ Trusted Confidants. Whether you come to us looking for answers, safety or support we’re always here for you. We’re like the best friend you never knew you had. A trusted confidant who ‘gets it.’ You won’t find judgment here. We understand what you’re going through. We’re experts in our field with experience and connections that will make things easier for you.

⚫ Relentless. We are strong, courageous and resilient, often taking on a leadership role in the community. Our work is grounded in proven research and evidence. We work strategically and collaboratively with our brilliant partners who inspire and strengthen us.

⚫ Ingenious. We are constantly working to solve what can sometimes seems ‘unsolvable.’ Innovating is the only way forward. We continue finding success by pulling together the latest research, experts, evidence and insights. Creating better, wiser, stronger systems to support people experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

⚫ Empowering. We welcome all who are on this journey with us. Happily sharing our knowledge, resources and experience. Ego has no place here. We know the future and our communities will be safer and brighter if we continue to work together to inform and empower everyone. Especially those who didn’t know they would need us.

Domestic violence organizations across Calgary and surrounding communities are responding to recent public discussion regarding Alberta’s Emergency Family Violence Services (EFVS) Program funding model.

Support remains available.

As these conversations continue, we want Albertans to know that help is still here for those experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

Across our communities, agencies continue working together to provide prevention, crisis response, shelter, counselling, outreach, safety planning, and long-term recovery supports. While perspectives on funding approaches may differ, our shared commitment remains unchanged: ensuring individuals and families can access safety, support, healing, and hope when they need it most.

Through collaboration, innovation, and strong community partnerships, we remain focused on supporting those impacted by abuse and strengthening access to services across our region.

Domestic violence and abuse isn’t always physical.

In fact, it is fundamentally about power and control.

It can look like:
→ Constant criticism that erodes self-worth
→ Being monitored constantly (every text, movement, conversation)
→ Economic control— withheld money, sabotaged jobs
→ Isolation from friends and family
→ Threats and intimidation
→ Sexual coercion
→ For teens: digital monitoring and control

These invisible forms of abuse leave invisible scars but very real harm.

If you suspect someone in your life is experiencing domestic violence and abuse, sometimes a simple “I’m here if you need to talk” can open a lifeline.

Recognize the signs of abuse.
Respond with compassion, not judgement.
Refer to safe, appropriate resources.

🗣️ LANGUAGE MATTERS. Help Change the Conversation about Domestic Violence and Abuse 🗣️

Our words have power 💬

The way we talk about domestic violence and abuse, and the words we choose to use, have a profound effect on those who hear them. Especially when they are coming to us for help.

We all have a role to play in supporting those impacted by domestic violence and abuse.

Through education and awareness, we aim to encourage more honest and accurate conversations about domestic violence and abuse that reflect the challenging realities faced by those affected. When victims feel supported without judgement, they’re more likely to seek help sooner. Many of the things we say, often without realizing it, can minimize victims’ experiences, shift blame onto them, or excuse the behaviours of the perpetrator. Talking openly about the nuances of domestic violence and abuse helps challenge the harmful myths and breakdown stigmas surrounding both victims and perpetrators.

By choosing awareness, compassion and understanding, we are saying we believe that abuse is never okay. We believe victims, and support perpetrators to change. And we believe everyone deserves to be safe, respected, supported, and loved 💜

🔎 MYTHS AND BARRIERS 🔍

Domestic violence and abuse are often misunderstood because of harmful myths and misconceptions that do not reflect the realities of this dangerous and complex issue.

This often leads to stigma, including being judged, blamed, or disbelieved, and creates barriers to seeking support.

By learning the facts, challenging harmful myths, and understanding the complexities of abuse, we can help create safer, more supportive communities for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence 💬

Abuse is about power and control. It is deliberate behaviour used to dominate, control, or harm another person. People who use abuse act against the will of their victims, who never ask for or choose to be abused. We believe that abuse is a choice. Choosing to not abuse is also a choice.

Every human has the right to feel safe, respected, supported and loved 💜 We’re here to help.

The person next door mows their lawn, waves hello and brings in your packages when you're away.

They’re often the last person you’d suspect to be someone who uses abuse — and that’s part of what makes abuse harder to see, and victims harder to believe.

When someone experiencing abuse finally speaks up, the response is often, “Not them— they’re such a good person.”

These reactions and the stigma surrounding domestic violence and abuse create barriers that make it harder for victims to come forward, seek support, or be believed.

This is why so many victims stay silent.
