ROOTS FROM YOUR PAST TO YOUR FUTURE by USAY
This new Mini Galleries exhibition brings together six emerging Indigenous artists sharing deeply personal works about identity, belonging, land, family, memory, and the places that continue to shape us. Spread across the park, each gallery feels like its own small world — intimate, thoughtful, and rooted in lived experience.

Mini Gallery 2 features Elle Everson, 23, Anishinaabe/Ojibwe from Treaty 1 and 3, now living on Treaty 7 territory in Calgary.

Deeply connected to nature and especially to trees, Elle created The Land to honour the life of trees and her connection to them. A stained-glass-like sky fills the branches, while stars and markings symbolize family connections across generations. The Mkwa (Bear) and paw prints represent her clan. Ribbon elements stretching through the piece connect different places and roots, while crystals, sweetgrass, and burned ribbons speak about resilience, journey, and connection to Earth Mother.

Take a walk through the Mini Galleries, discover all six installations, and enjoy the art in the park 🌿
Grateful to CADA for supporting youth artists and community-based public art.

Mini Galleries and USAY present ROOTS FROM YOUR PAST TO YOUR FUTURE 🌱

A new youth-led Mini Galleries exhibition bringing together six emerging Indigenous artists exploring identity, belonging, land, resilience, and the connections between past and future through intimate public art installations across Crescent Heights.

Mini Gallery 1 features returning Mini Galleries artist Jakob Kimber, also known as Kiááyo Tuk (Bear Spirit), from the Fraser Valley Cheam First Nations in BC.

His painting Born for the World reflects on identity, origin, and future aspirations. Cedar roots cradle a baby figure, mountains ground the work in home, and a globe symbolizes Jakob’s dream of sharing his cooking and creative skills with the world.

As both a chef and artist, Jakob often explores beauty through food and visual storytelling. This project became a way for him to reconnect with painting and reflect on where he comes from and where he hopes to go.

‘Born for the World’
Acrylic on Canvas, 2026

Take a walk through the Mini Galleries, discover all six installations, and enjoy the beautiful spring weather while exploring art in the park 🌿
Special thanks to CADA for making this Mini Galleries exhibition possible.

Enjoy the last days of our Mini Galleries exhibition — head to the park, take a walk, discover the artworks, and watch the short animations by our young artists: Monsters, Fables & Moving Things
A youth animation exhibition at Rotary Park

Part of the Festival of Animated Objects
In collaboration with Quickdraw Animation Society
Curated by Claudia & Tia

This exhibition explores how ideas take shape through animation — using drawing, collage, clay, and digital tools to build characters and stories frame by frame. Across the Mini Galleries, you can step into these small worlds and see how imagination becomes movement.

Mini Gallery No. 6:
Tamila — Hold Your Hand
Acrylic painting and ink drawing
12” x 16” x 1.5”, 2026

Tamila (17, Calgary) works across digital media, with music playing an important role in her process — sometimes as part of the work itself, sometimes as its starting point.

This piece is based on a character from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, shaped by a darker, obsessive energy. Inspired by the song I Hold Your Hand in Mine by Tom Lehrer, the work brings together animation, sound, and character into one narrative moment.

A mix of intensity and curiosity — something that pulls you in and makes you look twice.

To see the animation scan the QR code, and experience it as part of your walk — winter into spring, Calgary style.

Made possible by CADA — thank you!

Monsters, Fables & Moving Things
A youth animation exhibition at Rotary Park

Part of the Festival of Animated Objects
In collaboration with Quickdraw Animation Society
Curated by Claudia & Tia

This exhibition looks at how simple materials — paper, clay, everyday fragments — are turned into animation. Across the Mini Galleries, you can catch glimpses of how characters and stories are built frame by frame, through play, trial, and imagination.

Mini Gallery No. 5:
Ashlynn Strohschein — Fetch the Facts
Collage, 15.5” x 18.5” x 5”, 2026

Ashlynn Strohschein (13, Calgary) enjoys turning ideas into something you can actually see and hold. She works with clay, paint, and paper, often creating her own craft-based worlds.

In this piece, she builds a dog game show where the “underdog” ends up winning — inspired by her own dog and shows like Family Feud.

A playful story with a clear thought behind it: being different doesn’t make anyone less.

To see the animation, head to the park, scan the QR code, and enjoy it as part of your walk — winter into spring, Calgary style.

Exhibition on view until end of April March — just a two weeks left.

Made possible by CADA — thank you!

Monsters, Fables & Moving Things In the Mini Galleries right now!
A youth animation exhibition at Rotary Park

Part of the Festival of Animated Objects
In collaboration with Quickdraw Animation Society
Curated by Claudia & Tia.

This exhibition brings together simple materials — paper, objects, fragments — and turns them into moving images, built frame by frame by six young artists.

Mini Gallery No. 4:
Sean O’Connor — Stop Motion vs 2D Animation
Mixed media
12” x 16” x 6”, 2026

Sean O’Connor (14, Calgary) enjoys making art because it’s fun and shareable. He works with action figures, bringing them to life through animation — using what already exists and transforming it into something new.

Stop Motion vs 2D Animation combines two different animation techniques: custom-built figures in motion and hand-drawn 2D sequences. Inspired by Loft Studios, the piece plays with contrast and interaction between these two worlds.

Sean is especially interested in creating work that others can enjoy — turning animation into something to experience together.

To see the animation, head to the park, scan the QR code, and explore it as part of your walk — winter into spring, Calgary style.

Made possible by CADA — thank you!

Mini Gallery No. 3:
Henry Amos — Jimbo Sees the World
Cutout paper & plasticine
12.5” x 16” x 3.5”, 2026

Henry Amos (12, Lethbridge) enjoys working with clay and markers to create characters and small stories.

Jimbo Sees the World follows a rat traveling the globe by plane — inspired by a mouse drawing Henry saw at Quickdraw and driven by curiosity and adventure.

To see the animation, head to the park, scan the QR code, and enjoy it as part of your walk — winter into spring, Calgary style.

In Mini Gallery No. 2:
Samuel Bogarin, Alien Invasion
Acrylic painting and pencil drawing
12” x 16” x 3”, 2026

Samuel Bogarin is 13 years old and lives in Canada. He makes art inspired by real-life environments and transforms those impressions into animations and artworks. He also draws inspiration from books, animation, and art works such as EoE.

Alien Invasion is a hand-drawn animation about an invasion of Earth. It was inspired by Canada, the environment, Newgrounds, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and EoE. Through this work, Samuel hopes to evoke the feeling of early 2000s animation and give viewers the sense of traveling back in time.

To see the clip, head to the park, scan the QR code, and enjoy the exhibition, the showboxes, and these young artists’ animations as part of your walk.

Have ideas for how we can transform 2nd Ave NE? We want to hear from you!

We’re reimagining the closed section of 2nd Ave NE between 3rd St and 2nd St—and this is your chance to help shape it.

Think:
🌿 A winding pathway
🪑 Casual seating
🌸 Decorative planters
…or something totally new 🤔

Our goal is simple: create a vibrant, welcoming space that reflects our community and brings people together.
