Because of you, little Gerry can see again 🐘💚

Gerry was rescued in November 2023 and now lives at the Elephant Conservation Centre in Sumatra. He's playful, happy, and growing fast. But scars on his left eye have taken most of his sight on that side, and that blindness is likely to be permanent.

Your support keeps the Wildlife Ambulance on the road, and on their latest visit, the team found wonderful news. The irritation in Gerry's right eye has eased, and his vision on that side has almost fully returned!

Thanks to you, Gerry got a full check-over and food supplements to help him grow strong. And thanks to you, he'll see the world through at least one bright eye.

Did you know that Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra is one of the last strongholds for Sumatran elephants? These forests are home to 180 Sumatran elephants - herds that make up more than 10% of the world’s remaining population.

But these forests, and the elephants that live there, are under threat.

Enter: the River Patrol Team!

These brave rangers patrol and protect the forests from wildfires, poaching and illegal logging. And recently, just by physically being in the forest, they stopped a group of three poachers IN THEIR TRACKS. When the poachers spotted the River Patrol Team on their tails, they fled the forest and left behind snares and ropes.

Continuing on patrol, the team found a heart-breaking total of 17 snare traps in nine different locations, all set to injure and kill wildlife. Every single snare was destroyed on the spot, saving countless elephants and other precious wild lives.

Patrol teams in the Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra have been BUSY lately, doing everything they can to protect elephants and their forest home.

From fighting fires, patrolling forests and destroying snares... all the way to community education! 🧑‍🎓

Recently, teams held a special awareness day for 22 middle school students, sharing important information about Sumatran elephants and other amazing wildlife that depend on the Way Kambas forests for survival.

They shared all about the work of the River Patrol Team, how they help elephants, and how communities themselves can become part of the movement to protect precious elephants, and help keep their natural home standing and thriving. 🌳

🚒 Exciting news elephant friends – the brand new fire truck is HERE! 🚒

Thanks to your amazing support in our June fundraising appeal, we raised enough money to convert a Toyota Hilux into a fully equipped fire truck, ready to fight fires and protect the Sumatran elephant's home!

In Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra, fires threaten elephant lives every single day, often set by poachers to clear land for illegal hunting.
Now, thanks to you, we have a functioning, dedicated fire truck to race to the frontlines, and put the fires out before they spread.

🐘 Eyes in the sky, protection on the ground

Elephants and communities both call the edges of Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra home. To help keep everyone safe, our ranger patrol teams have recently been trained to fly camera drones over the park. During the day, the drone can now spot elephants near community land and track how they're moving.

That means rangers know earlier where elephants are headed. Communities get warned sooner. And human-elephant conflict can be prevented before it starts, not managed after the fact.

Plus, we get amazing footage just like this! Huge thank you to YOU, our amazing community, for making this important work possible to keep elephants safe and protected in their forest home. 🫶
