A construction industry leader, Frank Mitchell was named 2026 Australia's Local Hero for creating training and employment pathways for Aboriginal people, while ensuring cultural safety in the workplace.

As a young single father, being offered an electrical apprenticeship felt like a profound opportunity.

Through his businesses, Kardan Construction and Wilco Electrical, he is determined to give back and provide a fair go.

This week, Western Australians from a culturally and linguistically diverse background learnt about Australia's democracy, levels of government and preferential voting – to better understand how to make their vote count and their voice heard 📣

Auspire's Australia's Democracy and You Workshop featured expert insight from The Constitutional Centre of Western Australia and Western Australian Electoral Commission, with exercises, quizzes and a practice election to see how votes are counted.

Questions from the room were around the strength of Australia's democracy, voting above and below the line, and introducing online voting.

This workshop was presented in partnership with the Office of Multicultural Interests.

From meeting residents and community leaders in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, to speaking to students and our Auspire network in Perth – Katherine inspired everyone she met with her spirit of determination, curiosity and belief in making the impossible possible, as Australia's first astronaut.

World-renowned botanist and WA’s 2026 Senior Australian of the Year, Professor Kingsley Dixon AO, is heading up a project that aims to save WA’s Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo from extinction by restoring urgently needed habitat.

Corridors for Carnaby’s will see more than 200,000 trees planted south of Mandurah to connect the much-loved birds with critical habitat for food, water and nesting sites.

"This is the largest single planting ever undertaken to bring back the food that only Carnaby’s can get into and it’s the food that Carnaby’s evolved to eat."
