Did you know that Epilepsy WA offers a Seizure Alert Device Loan Program, giving eligible Western Australians the opportunity to trial a NightWatch seizure monitoring device in their own home?

The NightWatch is designed to detect major nighttime seizures by monitoring heart rate and movement during sleep, helping to alert carers and family members when assistance may be needed.

For many families, trialing a device before making a purchase can provide valuable insight into whether it is the right fit for their circumstances.

Through our Loan Program, participants can:
✅ Trial a NightWatch device at home
✅ Learn how the technology works in real-life situations
✅ Explore whether the device meets their individual needs prior to purchasing
✅ Gain confidence in using seizure monitoring technology

While no device can guarantee the detection of every seizure, seizure alert technology can provide an additional layer of support and peace of mind for some people living with epilepsy and their families.

To find out more about the NightWatch Seizure Alert Device Loan Program, contact Epilepsy WA on 1300 660 880 or email [email protected].

We also run special Seizure Alert Device Information Workshops here in Nedlands where you can find out about all the latest technology available for seizure detection. Next workshop is on Wednesday 17 June at 10am

Schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to creating safe, supportive and inclusive environments for students living with epilepsy are proudly recognised by Epilepsy WA.

This recognition acknowledges schools that invest in epilepsy training for staff through Epilepsy WA, maintain current epilepsy care plans, and undertake awareness activities that help challenge misconceptions, reduce stigma and foster understanding within their school community.

For more than 60 years, Epilepsy WA has been supporting Western Australians impacted by epilepsy while working to increase awareness, improve safety and promote inclusion across the community.

Today, Epilepsy WA CEO Emma presented a special recognition certificate to Kate Day from Sacred Heart College, Sorrento, WA, during a student-run coffee shop pop-up at their Mary MacKillop Centre.

The initiative not only raised valuable funds to support the work of Epilepsy WA but also provided students with meaningful learning opportunities and hands-on experience, reflecting the school’s commitment to community engagement, inclusion and epilepsy awareness.

Our latest E news is out now!

In May, we were honoured to attend an Epilepsy Awareness Morning Tea at Parliament House, hosted by Mr Hugh Jones MLA, Hon Kate Doust MLC, and Ms Michelle Maynard MLA. The event brought together members of the epilepsy community, supporters, and parliamentarians to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and encourage open conversations about epilepsy.

Guests heard powerful and deeply personal stories, including Andy Milton sharing the loss of his daughter Evie to SUDEP, Epilepsy Warrior Haylee Mills’ moving performance, and Warrick Brown’s inspiring journey living with epilepsy. These voices are vital in helping ensure better understanding, safety, and support for people living with epilepsy.

We also celebrated the success of our Annual Street Appeal on 8 May, where our team and volunteers connected with the community in Murray Street Mall. From heartfelt conversations to raising awareness among new audiences, the day highlighted the importance of community engagement. A special thank you goes to our dedicated volunteers whose energy and commitment made the day such a success.

Looking ahead, excitement is building for the return of our much-loved 80s Retro Musical Bingo, taking place on Saturday 27 June at Ascot Racecourse. This vibrant event promises a fun-filled evening of music, games, prizes, and community spirit, all while raising vital funds to support West Australians living with epilepsy.

Trigger Talk Tuesdays 💜 Know your triggers 💜 Take control.

WINTER WEATHER AND TEMPERATURE CHANGES
Winter is here! ❄️ For some people living with epilepsy, sudden changes in temperature, extreme heat or cold, and seasonal changes can sometimes increase the risk of seizures.

Cold weather may affect the body in different ways, including disrupted sleep, increased illness, stress on the body, and changes to daily routines. Moving between very cold and heated environments can also affect some people who are sensitive to temperature changes.

⚠️ Why it matters:
• Sudden temperature changes may affect brain activity
• Winter illnesses and fevers can increase seizure risk
• Sleep routines are often disrupted during colder months
• Stress and fatigue may increase during seasonal changes
• Dehydration can still occur in winter, even when it’s cold

💡 Helpful tips:
• Dress appropriately for changing temperatures
• Keep up fluids and stay hydrated
• Prioritise sleep and rest
• Take medications as prescribed
• Manage illness early and seek medical advice when needed

If you or someone you care for lives with epilepsy, understanding seasonal and environmental triggers can help you better manage seizure risk during winter.
