As construction of Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) approaches completion and we prepare to welcome families, planning for the neighbouring Swanbourne Community Parkland is also moving forward.

The hospice and its surrounding landscape have been considered together from the beginning, through close collaboration between Hassell’s architecture and landscape teams. Hassell Associate and Sandcastles design lead, James French and Senior Landscape Architect Rocelyn Crowe are part of that work, considering everything from the warm, natural materials inside Sandcastles to its gardens, pathways and relationship with the surrounding coastal landscape.

For children and families, this is about much more than how Sandcastles looks. It is about how the hospice feels and what its spaces allow families to do: rest, play, gather, connect with nature and simply spend time together. The cultural themes of heart, pathways, family, Country and home have also helped guide the design, underpinned by the curatorial vision 'to be held'.

The plans for Swanbourne Community Parkland carry those ideas into the landscape, with accessible pathways, nature-based play, places for rest and reflection, native planting and stronger connections to the surrounding bushland, local wildlife and coast. It will create a welcoming place alongside Sandcastles for children, families and the wider community to share.

The Swanbourne Parkland Fund will support the landscaping and planting needed to bring these plans to life.

Every second Friday for more than 25 years, PCHF volunteers Janet and Nancy have set up their fundraising stall right outside the Gift Shop at Perth Children's Hospital.

Their dedication means they're now very close to reaching a huge $350,000 raised for PCHF, supporting initiatives like the Play and Wait Activity Trolley, which brings play and joy to kids and families during hospital visits.

When Fleur died in 2022, her parents, Michael and Miranda, said goodbye to her at home because Western Australia had nowhere purpose-built for a family in their position to go.

Their experience is part of the reason Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) exists.

As Michael explains, a hospital ward is not where families want a child’s final days to be spent. Children and families need comfort, familiar faces and the people they love close by. They need a place that feels like home, with specialist care and support around them.

Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) will give WA families that choice, helping children live as fully and comfortably as possible, while giving families precious time together.

Construction is nearly complete, but we still need the community’s help to open the doors.

Michael and Miranda have shared Fleur’s story so that other families will have somewhere to turn when they need it most.

Meet the ZeroG 3D, a robot that takes the weight off, so WA kids can find their strength again. 💜

Harper, Bruce, Luca, Rosa and Eve are some of the first kids to try this dynamic bodyweight support system at PCH. It supports a range of conditions, including cerebral palsy and cancer recovery, helping kids safely practice walking, balancing and everyday movements.

PCHF committed $1.2 million to bring this world-class technology to WA kids, a first for any Australian children's hospital.

A place for comfort, play and moments of relief.

Thanks to an extraordinary gift of almost $150,000 from Trendsetter Homes, the sensory and soft play rooms at Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) will be fully fitted out for the children and families who will use them.

The spaces will include interactive sensory lighting, soft play structures, therapeutic seating and low-stimulation areas where children can relax, play and spend time with their families.

For Trendsetter Homes Managing Director Michael Agostino and his wife Brooke, visiting Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) brought home the significance of what they were helping to create.

“You know what you’re donating to and you know the cause, but until you see it, you just don’t get it.

“It’s so much bigger than just the word ‘hospice’ when you see the lengths they’ve gone to, to make sure it doesn’t feel like a hospital.

“To be part of something ground-breaking like that is brilliant.”

We are incredibly grateful to Michael, Brooke and the Trendsetter Homes team for helping create spaces that will bring comfort, connection and joy to WA children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Another part of Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) is taking shape.

Last week, artists Sioux Tempestt and Julianne Wade began painting a new mural across the hospice hardcourt. The hardcourt will be a place for play, activity and time together.

This mural, together with the artwork sandblasted into the garden pathways, is helping make it feel unmistakably part of Sandcastles: welcoming, joyful and intentional.

Sioux and Julianne also led the art workshops that brought together children with life-limiting conditions, their siblings, families, volunteers and students from Swanbourne Primary School. Through accessible, hands-on activities, they explored ideas of care, shelter, home, connection and the natural landscape surrounding Sandcastles.

Those workshops formed part of the broader creative vision, 'To Be Held'. Now, that same sense of colour, movement and belonging is extending into the hospice's outdoor spaces, with the children's artwork printed on glass discs and displayed in the garden.

We wish to extend our thanks to the team at WA art consultancy Apparatus and to Jahne Rees from Scapeism, both of whom worked closely with our team on this project.

Five years ago, the Kids' Bridge (Koolangka Bridge) opened, connecting Perth Children's Hospital and Health Service straight to the bushland of Kings Park.

For kids facing hospital stays, it means fresh air and somewhere to escape to. For families, it's a moment to breathe and take a walk. For clinicians, it's even become a tool for physio and occupational therapy sessions.

Meet Dr Lisa Cuddeford, Head of Department, Paediatric Palliative Care and Hospice Service at the Child and Adolescent Health Service at Perth Children’s Hospital, and one of the people helping shape the clinical vision for Sandcastles (Boodja Mia).

Lisa brings more than 25 years of experience in paediatric palliative medicine across the UK and Australia. Before moving to Australia, she helped establish a Community Paediatric Palliative Care Service in Birmingham and served as Medical Director of Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Throughout her career, Lisa has worked alongside children living with life-limiting conditions and their families, supporting them through complex medical, emotional and practical challenges.

“There is a common misconception that palliative care is only about end-of-life care, but in reality it is about helping children and families live as well as possible for as long as possible,” Lisa said.

Her role in bringing Sandcastles to life has included helping ensure its care, environment and services are built around what children and families genuinely need. Alongside specialist medical care, this includes respite, symptom management, bereavement support, sibling programs and opportunities for families to spend meaningful time together.

Lisa and her team are now looking forward to seeing families experience a place created especially for them: one that feels warm, safe and home-like while providing world-class paediatric palliative care.

We honour the Noongar story woven into the heart of Sandcastles Children's Hospice (Boodja Mia).

Created by Noongar Elder Barry McGuire, the artwork stretching across the building's facade tells the journey to kurannap, a special, spiritual place of rest.

As WA's first children's hospice prepares to welcome its first children and families in the coming months, we are deeply grateful to Barry for helping create a place that will offer comfort, connection, and hope.

Over the course of construction of WA's first children's hospice, we have welcomed media, politicians, donors, partners and families through Sandcastles (Boodja Mia) to see the hospice taking shape.

There is a significant amount of work behind every one of these visits. Our fundraising and project management teams, along with our executive teams and Board coordinate closely with West to West Group to bring people safely through an active building site, while sharing the detail, thinking and purpose behind every part of the hospice.

Those tours have become an important part of the Sandcastles journey. They have allowed donors and partners to see what their support is making possible, helped decision-makers and media understand why Western Australia needs a children’s hospice, and kept the children and families who will use it firmly at the centre of the conversation.

As rooms once seen only on plans have become real spaces, the tours have also helped people imagine what will happen here: families spending time together, children being cared for in a place that feels like home, and memories being created in one of Perth’s most beautiful coastal settings.

After six years of work to bring Sandcastles to life, every visit is a reminder of how far we have come, how many people have contributed and why this place matters.

Thank you to West to West Group for the extraordinary care and flexibility involved in making these tours possible alongside the work of building the hospice.
