🏵️ Daffodil Watch! 🏵️
Thanks to the incredible support of our donors, one of our 2025 Giving Day projects—the transformation of the Cancer Centre Gardens—is coming to life.
The team has been hard at work creating a calming and uplifting outdoor space for patients and families to enjoy during what can often be long days of treatment and appointments. A few weeks ago, hundreds of daffodil bulbs were planted throughout the gardens, and we’re excited to share that the very first green shoots have emerged this week!

It’s a small sign of what’s to come, and we can’t wait to see the gardens bursting into colour when the daffodils bloom. We look forward to sharing the progress with everyone who helped make this project possible.

Thank you for helping bring comfort, hope, and a little extra joy to the Cancer Centre community.

A/Prof Kathy Zhu was a Discovery Grant Award Winner in 2025, receiving $30,000 from Charlies Foundation for Research towards her project on how to improve bone loss predictions in those at risk of Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a common, chronic condition where bones become less dense, lose minerals like calcium and become more fragile, putting people with osteoporosis at risk of breaking bones more easily. Symptoms of osteoporosis are often absent until a fracture appears, making understanding of fracture risk crucial.

Kathy’s research involves using data from dual-energy absorptiometry (DXA) reports to build a program that extracts and compiles information into a structured database.

DXA reports are essential in both diagnosing and managing osteoporosis, providing an accurate assessment of bone mineral density at multiple sites.

"We then analyse how individual and combined clinical risk factors influence the rate of bone mineral density decline, therefore advancing understanding of fracture risk," she said.

"These findings will help clinicians to identify patients with clusters of risk factors linked to faster bone loss. Ultimately, the tools developed could be integrated into clinical workflows to support more proactive osteoporosis care," Kathy said.

The findings will enable earlier intervention, more targeted monitoring and personalised treatment strategies, with research set to help identify high-risk patients, helping prevent fractures and preserve independence and quality of life.

"At a system-wide level, it will reduce hospitalisations, long-term care needs and healthcare costs," Kathy said.

The Charlies Foundation for Research team wish Kathy all the best with her ongoing research and are extremely grateful on behalf of Western Australian’s who will benefit from this research in such a vital area of health care.

Today is World Brain Tumour Day and Charlies Foundation for Research wants to share a story from Lily, the beloved partner of Stuart who was diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).

A heartfelt message from Lily -

“Sometimes you just know. That’s how I felt when I crossed paths with Stuart. He stepped into my life and the stars aligned. I just knew we were going to spend the rest of our lives together.

We met in New Zealand and we took off overseas whenever we could, trekking through South Africa, voyaging to Paris… so when Stuart was diagnosed, I can’t ever fully express the devastation of knowing that our time together would end soon. But what I can say is that it put everything into focus.

And I want to share with you, to say the care that Stuart received at the end of his life meant everything to me and to him. Stuart was lucky to have the care of Mena, a physio at Charlies and Danielle, a physio at Osborne Park Hospital. Together they dedicated themselves to helping Stuart achieve what he dearly wished for—standing up at our wedding.

When the big day came, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Stuart’s brain cancer had taken hold of his body and I hadn’t seen him stand up for months.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I walked into the courtyard. There was Stuart standing up tall to greet me. My heart just overflowed with pride and joy and grief.

But many other patients don’t have that same chance. This is where the support for the Foundation comes in, because they fund research into better care. I hope you can help too, with a donation today.

Those moments that mean everything, those memories that last forever—that’s what you could help give other families like mine, by donating to support Charlies researchers.

Dr Brendan Luu is investigating whether a simple eye scan can be used as a screening test for cancers developing elsewhere in the body.

Dr Luu is Resident Medical Officer at Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Hospital Group and was awarded the $30,000 Ray Florence Shaw Grant from Charlies Foundation for Research in 2025 to investigate whether changes in the retina’s blood vessels can reveal the presence of cancer elsewhere in the body.

His research will examine whether cancer leaves detectable signatures in the retina, potentially paving the way for a new, non-invasive approach to cancer screening. The project will begin by studying donor eye tissue, with future research aiming to validate findings using advanced retinal imaging technology already used in clinical practice.
“A simple scan of an individual’s retinal blood vessels could flag potential cancers developing elsewhere in the body,” Dr Luu said.

If successful, this work could help create a more accessible, patient-friendly method of detecting cancer earlier, before symptoms develop.

It's innovation such as this that keeps the purpose of the Foundation alive. Charlies Foundation for Research would like to acknowledge that it's through the philanthropic support of our generous donors that drives this innovative research - Congratulations Dr Luu on your Grant and for the work you're doing to improve the health outcomes for future generations.
