Australian Doctors For Africa

Australian Doctors For Africa ADFA was established in 2005 to address the need for health care in developing countries.

A Perth based charity committed to improving the health of people in developing countries through volunteer medical teams, equipment and infrastructure projects. ADFA's principal activity is to send voluntary medical teams to Ethiopia, Somaliland, the Comoros and Madagascar, as requested by local communities, organisations or Governments to provide medical aid. The emphasis was originally on ortho

paedic surgery but other areas of medicine are also represented, widening ADFA's scope of contribution. ADFA compliments the delivery of voluntary medical services by developing and implementing strategic projects that are aimed at sustainability of health care in these areas. ADFA provides clinical teaching to up-skill the local health workforce, supports formal education of local health care professionals, focuses on procurement of vital medical equipment and supplies to support projects. In addition to the ADFA is committed to infrastructure projects, which includes the construction of clinical facilities. Through commitment to sustainable improvement, making change and addressing need, ADFA makes a significant contribution to general health care through its projects to reach children, the excluded, disadvantaged, poor and vulnerable populations.

World Clubfoot Day in June each year raises awareness of clubfoot, a common congenital condition, and to celebrate the remarkable progress made in its treatment around the world.

In celebration, we proudly recognise the outstanding work of our ADFA clubfoot teams in Madagascar, along with our partners at Diversity Action Network in Somaliland. Your commitment and expertise are transforming lives, helping more than 300 children each year.

We extend our sincere thanks to Perth orthopaedic surgeon Dr Kate Stannage, who established the program in 2014 and continues to mentor and support the Madagascar team.

We are also deeply grateful to the Forrest family, Vara Mada, BlackEarth Minerals, and the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) for their generous support of our Madagascar Clubfoot Program. Your partnership makes this life-changing work possible.

They’ve done it again!
ADFA’s recent gastroenterology mission to Madagascar highlighted the expanding impact of collaboration, expertise, and ongoing partnerships in healthcare.
Over two weeks, ADFA’s volunteer team worked alongside local health professionals across Antananarivo, Antsirabe and Toliara, delivering specialist care, practical training, and helping strengthen essential medical services.
But beyond the numbers, what matters most is the lasting impact.
By mentoring local doctors and nurses, sharing practical skills, and supporting the return of specialist services, this mission was about building stronger, more sustainable local healthcare for the future—not simply providing care in the moment.
A heartfelt thank you to our extraordinary volunteer team—Dr Digby Cullen, Dr Oliver Waters, Sharon Kennedy, and Joermar Bermejo—for so generously giving their time, expertise, and compassion.
Big thank you to our local team, Lucile and Hanitra, for your incredible dedication, flexibility, and willingness to help with even the smallest details. Your support behind the scenes made an enormous difference.
This assignment was made possible thanks to the generous support of St John of God Subiaco Hospital, whose grant funding helped bring this important work to life.
We are also deeply grateful to our equipment and consumables donors, whose generosity helped equip this mission with much-needed medical supplies. We would particularly like to acknowledge Philips for their donation of leads, which ensured the patient monitors could be fully operational.
A special thank you to Air Mauritius for their generous additional baggage allowance, which enabled ADFA to transport donated medical equipment and consumables where they were urgently needed.
This is how ADFA builds sustainable partnerships—working alongside local teams, strengthening skills, and helping create lasting change.

Changing Lives and Building the Future of ENT Care in Madagascar
Small but mighty, ADFA’s volunteer team of five ENT professionals delivered far more than specialist clinical care during their 10-day mission to Madagascar last month; they helped lay the foundations for a more sustainable future for ENT services in the region.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr Latif Kadhim (ENT Surgeon), Sam Last (ENT Registrar), Mei Foong (Anaesthetist), Marika Brandenburg (Nurse), and Alison Cook (Audiologist) for your exceptional commitment, generosity, and dedication of your time and expertise.
Our sincere thanks also to Clinicare Pharmacy, Shenton Park, Word of Mouth Technology Australia, Med-EL Australia, Hearing Australia, Alison Cook, and each and every individual who supported this mission through donations, equipment, and encouragement.
Your impact will be felt far beyond this mission.

Strengthening orthopaedic care in East Africa

Dr Graham Forward recently delivered the ADFA / AO Alliance Pre-Basic Orthopaedic Practical Workshop to 44 junior doctors—an inspiring and hands-on learning experience.
Brought to life by a skilled Tanzanian faculty, the workshop created an engaging and supportive environment for the next generation of clinicians to build their skills and confidence.
A big thank you to the AO Alliance National Course Chairs, Dr Patrick Deogratias and Dr William Mgisha, for their support in making these opportunities possible.
We are also very grateful to the Emirates Foundation for their continued partnership and commitment to helping us deliver our mission and strategy.
Special recognition to Dr Michael Wren, who developed and refined this course, and to Dr Claude Martin, whose ongoing support and insight continue to strengthen the course content and ensure it is well received wherever it’s delivered.
It’s inspiring to see knowledge shared, skills strengthened, and partnerships making a real difference.
