Building a community around women's softball is at the heart of SEMSA's seasonal competitions, where we pride ourselves on youth development opportuinities, and celebrate skills across our association through our representative teams, both at a junior and masters level. With evergrowing inclusivity we also pride ourselves on our junior grades being gender inclusive, and by providing an intergrated softball experience for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. Congratulations to our very own umpire who has now gained Silver Status.
You may also recognise a few extra names and if you see them around make sure to say hey and congratulations, we are very lucky to have such a great calibre of umpires available to us.

UMPIRE UPDATE - MAY

Recognition and Service
I would like to acknowledge the following umpiring award recipients for the 2025/26 season:
Umpire of the Year
β€’ Paul Cutiar
Service Awards
β€’ Steve Gunter – Diamond Status
β€’ Bart Lethlean – Diamond Status
β€’ Mark Wareham – Silver Status
β€’ Cliff Warner – Bronze Status
These individuals have made significant contributions to the WA umpiring community through their commitment, longevity, and service to the sport.

Winter Season Update
The PSL Men’s winter season is now underway, with umpire appointments continuing across the competition. Focus areas remain consistency, professionalism, communication, and game management standards across all levels.

The season has commenced positively, with ongoing emphasis being placed on maintaining quality standards and supporting developing umpires throughout the competition structure.

Upcoming Competitions and Tournament Appointments
The following events are currently being coordinated from an umpiring perspective:
β€’ Bayswater Morley Tournament – 23rd–24th May
(appointments currently being finalised)
β€’ Geraldton Carnival – 30th May–1st June
β€’ Singapore Juniors Tournament – 12th–14th June @ Vikings

Mirrabooka

Expressions of interest are currently being sought for the Singapore Juniors Tournament and the U14/U18 Boys State Championships to assist with workforce planning and appointments.
Umpire Leadership Group
A small Umpire Leadership Group has recently been established to assist as a sounding board and provide operational support across a range of umpiring matters and initiatives.

The group includes representation from both metropolitan and regional areas, ensuring broader perspectives and experiences are incorporated into discussions and planning.

The purpose of the group is to strengthen communication, support consistency, assist with leadership development, and contribute positively to the overall function and direction of umpiring within WA.
Development Focus
A continued development focus remains on strike zone consistency, which continues to be one of the most scrutinised areas of officiating by players, coaches, and spectators.

Communication to the umpiring group has reinforced the importance of continual skill development, preparation, and maintaining standards through regular practice and self-assessment.

Closing
Overall, umpiring operations continue to progress positively across the winter period, with ongoing work being undertaken around appointments, development, communication, and leadership support structures.
