Palliative Care Tasmania is the peak representative body for palliative care in Tasmania.

Palliative Care Tasmania (PCT) is Tasmania’s peak body for palliative care and one of eight member organisations of Palliative Care Australia. Our vision is that all Tasmanians with a life-limiting illness, together with those they value, are supported to live, die and grieve well. Our mission is to lead and influence policy and practice, advocate, educate and support people of all ages to access quality palliative care.

During National Palliative Care Week, we were privileged to visit the Peacock One Ward and deliver a collection of beautiful donations received through our Gift of Comfort community project.

We extend our sincere thanks to the quilting groups, community organisations, volunteers, and compassionate community members who generously contributed handmade quilts and other comfort gifts. Your kindness will help bring warmth, dignity, and comfort to people receiving care in the Peacock Ward, as well as to their families and loved ones during some of life's most challenging moments. 🧡

Every donation represents a simple but powerful act of care, reminding people that they are not alone.

As this project continues to grow, we hope to expand the Gift of Comfort initiative across Tasmania. If you would like to be involved, contribute, or help bring this project to your community, we invite you to visit our website and learn more.

Our friends at Spring Bay Su***de Prevention Network Inc. are hosting their annual Winter Solstice Swim at Raspins Beach, Orford on Saturday 20 June.

Whether you're brave enough for a quick dip, keen to show off a fancy dress costume, or simply want to enjoy the community atmosphere, everyone is welcome. After the swim, warm up with a free BBQ, hot drinks, and live music from local musician Cam Tapp.

Community events like these are a wonderful reminder of the importance of connection, wellbeing, and coming together during the colder months.

We are grateful to Hon. Mike Gaffney MLC for recently speaking in the Tasmanian Parliament about the importance of palliative care and the role it plays in the lives of Tasmanians.

During his speech, Mr Gaffney highlighted the need for greater awareness, understanding, and open conversations about serious illness, ageing, dying, grief, and loss. 🧡

He also recognised the important work of Palliative Care Tasmania in supporting individuals, families, carers, volunteers, and communities across our state.

Palliative care is about helping people live as well as possible, for as long as possible, with dignity, comfort, choice, and support. By encouraging these conversations and building compassionate communities, we can help ensure every Tasmanian has access to the care and support they need.

We thank Hon. Mike Gaffney MLC for using his parliamentary address to highlight the importance of palliative care and the role compassionate communities play in supporting Tasmanians through serious illness, dying, death, grief, and bereavement.

Truth. Reckoning. Change. At Palliative Care Tasmania, we know that healing begins with honesty. Supporting people through serious illness, dying, grief and loss means sitting with difficult conversations, listening with compassion, and making space for truth to be heard.

This National Reconciliation Week, we recognise that conversations about care, grief, loss and dignity do not exist separately from history, culture, and lived experience. Reconciliation calls on all of us to listen more deeply, acknowledge truth, and work towards care that is safe, respectful, and inclusive.

This week, we invite our community to reflect, listen, and consider what reconciliation looks like in the way we care for one another.

Volunteers are at the heart of so much of what happens in palliative care. Today, we want to recognise a very special volunteer, Caroline Cochrane.

For the past two years, Caroline has generously given her time to Palliative Care Tasmania. Every Tuesday, she helps pack and send our free online resource orders to people and organisations, helping important palliative care resources reach the people who need them.

Caroline also supports our events, always bringing kindness, warmth and enthusiasm. We are incredibly grateful for her passion for palliative care and the care she brings to everything she does.

This volunteers week, we would also like to acknowledge many volunteers who help make this work possible.

To our Board, thank you for your leadership, governance, advocacy and the steady support you provide behind the scenes. To our lived experience voices, thank you for sharing your stories so generously and helping create greater understanding of palliative care in our community.

To volunteering groups across the South, North, North West and right across Tasmania, thank you for the time you give supporting patients, carers and families with compassion, companionship and care.

And to volunteers across Australia who support people through palliative care, grief and bereavement, thank you. Your kindness makes a difference every single day. 🧡
