Palliative Care Tasmania is the peak representative body for palliative care in Tasmania.

Palliative Care Tasmania (PCT) is Tasmania’s peak body for palliative care and one of eight member organisations of Palliative Care Australia. Our vision is that all Tasmanians with a life-limiting illness, together with those they value, are supported to live, die and grieve well. Our mission is to lead and influence policy and practice, advocate, educate and support people of all ages to access quality palliative care.

We are pleased to welcome Liz Jack, Madeleine Way and Glen Williams as new volunteer Directors to the Palliative Care Tasmania Board.

Our new Directors bring valuable professional expertise, diverse perspectives and lived experience that will help guide PCT’s strategic direction and strengthen our work across Tasmania.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our outgoing Deputy Chair, Tim Johns, for his dedication, leadership and generous support over many years. We are grateful for his contribution to PCT and wish him all the very best for the future. 🧡

We look forward to working with our new Directors as we continue advocating for quality palliative and end-of-life care for all Tasmanians.

This Sunday, 1 November, is World Compassionate Communities Day.

Compassion is at the heart of everything we do at palliative care Tasmania. It was also a key theme of our recent conference, where we explored the power of connection and the importance of supporting one another.

Compassion can be found in simple, everyday gestures. A friendly conversation over coffee, checking in on a neighbour, offering a helping hand or simply being there for someone during a difficult time.

This World Compassionate Communities Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reach out to a neighbour, friend, family member or someone in their community who may need a little extra care and support.

Together, through small acts of kindness and connection, we can build stronger, more compassionate communities. 🧡

Some of the most meaningful conversations happen when we come together, share stories and take time to connect.

Palliative Care Tasmania, together with 1000 Hearts, invites you to join us for a relaxed morning of sewing, connection and conversation at Devonport Library.

Bring a friend, and take some time to talk about life, death and what matters most to us.

Whether you would like to share your thoughts, listen to others, ask questions or simply enjoy stitching a little heart of kindness, there is a place for everyone.

Through these simple moments of connection, we hope to make conversations about life and death a little easier and remind ourselves of the importance of kindness and compassion in our communities.

Scholarship and bursary applications are now open for APHC27OPCC. For Tasmania’s palliative care community, this support could help you attend the conference in Adelaide, learn from leading voices and connect with colleagues from across the sector. 🧡

Several opportunities are available, each with its own eligibility criteria and level of support. First-round scholarships cover conference registration and pre-conference workshops, with travel and accommodation support for recipients living outside metropolitan Adelaide.

This Seniors Month, we’re bringing Reframing Palliative Care to Launceston, creating a welcoming space for our community to ask questions, challenge some of the common myths and better understand what palliative care can offer.

Together, we’ll explore quality of life, meaningful conversations, planning ahead, Advance Care Directives and managing symptoms. Whether palliative care is something you have encountered personally or simply want to understand better, everyone is welcome.

The session will also include a relaxing 1000 Hearts stitching activity, where you can create a small handmade heart to offer kindness and comfort to someone experiencing a difficult time. No sewing experience is needed.

We were glad to represent Palliative Care Tasmania at the Care2Serve Carers Fun Day events during National Carers Week. 🧡

With plenty of conversations, activities and opportunities to connect, it was lovely to meet carers, families and community members, share our resources and talk about palliative care and the support available.

Thank you to Carers Tasmania and Care2Serve for hosting these welcoming events and celebrating the contribution of Tasmania’s family and friend carers. Thank you also to everyone who stopped by for a chat.

Caring for carers is an essential part of palliative care. This National Carers Week, we recognise Tasmania’s 87,000 unpaid carers and the care, time and commitment they give to family members and friends. Supporting their wellbeing and ensuring they feel informed, heard and supported matters too.

Palliative Care Australia’s monthly webinar exploring the National Palliative Care Standards will focus on Standard Three: Caring for Carers. Panel members will share their professional experiences and practical insights into how services can embed support for carers into everyday practice.

The standards guide compassionate, high-quality palliative care across specialist services, health care and aged care. We encourage health professionals and those working in aged care to explore this webinar and consider how their service can better recognise and respond to carers’ needs. It’s a valuable opportunity to turn our appreciation for carers into practical support.
