THE LISTENING GARDEN: 11 - 17 May
Bec Stevens is an interdisciplinary artist based in nipaluna. She is currently in her fifth year working as Artist in Residence at the Foy Fagan Centre. She works with the stories and connections that arise from a bespoke three-tiered garden on a trolley that is wheeled around the wards.
This garden on a trolley changes each day and season, holding some plants from its original planting and re-purposing in 2021, when it was being discard at the Royal Hobart Hospital. The plants with their scents, blooms and quiet beauty, resilience and growth prompt connections and the outpouring of many stories. Some of these stories find their way into small handmade books, and some prompt further creative actions.
The garden trolley usually holds over 40 plant types, small books, poems, garden curiosities, along with jars of propagating plants and scented leaves and blooms that can be taken to patients noses.
Bec’s practice spans experience in artist run initiatives, galleries, museums and community spaces for over 25 years. After a number of residencies, locally, nationally andinternationally Bec looked to the seminal work of the Artist Placement Group (APG) to inform the model that has been developed in her multi-year residency at the Roy Fagan Centre, one of their reflections and intentions being “Use your artists, don’t just collect them”.
