Drawing can be a simple and fun way to support your child’s language development. If your child points to a dog and says, “Doggie,” draw a simple dog together and talk about it: “Yes, a doggie! It’s brown and soft.”

By connecting words with pictures and everyday experiences, you’re helping your child build their vocabulary and confidence in communicating.

Tip: Follow their interests, name what they’re drawing and add a few extra words to keep the conversation going.

Sometimes the best way to learn is to have a go.

Tip: Give your baby time to attempt new movements and explore challenges safely before helping. A little patience and encouragement can support problem-solving, confidence and developing independence.

Every smile, silly face and funny sound helps your baby practise the building blocks of communication. Make different facial expressions, pause and give them time to respond. Then celebrate every little copy, it all counts!

Tip: Wait a few seconds after making a face before trying another one. Babies often need a little extra time to process and respond.

Every little conversation matters 💛

When your child tries to communicate, they're doing more than just putting words together; they're building confidence, connection and language skills. Even if their words don't quite make sense yet, your smile, eye contact and response show them that what they have to say is important.

Those small moments of encouragement help create a safe space where communication can grow. Keep listening, keep responding and keep celebrating every attempt.
