The Macquarie Island Conservation Foundation is a not-for-profit charity that aims to ensure the natural and heritage values of Macquarie Island are protected from threats and conserved for current and future generations. The Foundation aims to fund and help facilitate practical science and research programs, as well as provide supplementary support to management initiatives, student projects and outreach activities which will benefit the conservation of Macquarie Island. The Foundation also seeks to provide an ongoing connection to Macquarie Island through news and updates about the island, and inspire the Tasmanian community to value and contribute to the protection of the island and its unique inhabitants. Specifically, the Foundation will:

- Raise funds for small grants and targeted conservation and research initiatives which align with the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service’s management of Macquarie Island.

- Provide an avenue for people to connect with the island through a website, social media and newsletters.

- Participate in community festivals and school outreach programs to promote awareness and appreciation of the natural and heritage values of Tasmania’s only sub-Antarctic island.

Sadly bird flu has been detected on Macquarie Island. It was just a matter of time before the virus made its way to the Green Sponge. Hopefully not too many animals are impacted.

Bird flu has been detected in samples taken from a southern elephant seal and a kelp gull on Macquarie Island, where expeditioners have recently been evacuated due to risks associated with a potential outbreak.

The Australian Antarctic Division will launch a mission to extract personnel from Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean due to the psychological risk posed by a potential outbreak of bird flu at the remote wildlife sanctuary.

We’re thrilled to congratulate Dr Clive McMahon for today receiving the Australian Antarctic Medal. Clive has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to Australia’s Antarctic Program, in marine mammal telemetry and ocean observing systems. Clive is a long-time supporter of MICF and a member of our Grant sub-Committee. Congratulations Clive!

Our rangers Karina and Gemma are keeping a close eye on some of Australia’s rarest seabirds at Macquarie Island Nature Reserve and World Heritage Area.

Using remote cameras, they are tracking the progress of four wandering albatross chicks in the harsh subantarctic winter conditions.

This , we highlight their work to monitor the largest seabirds in the world as part of the multi-agency Macquarie Island Wildlife Monitoring Program.
