The Macquarie Island Conservation Foundation is a not-for-profit charity that aims to ensure the natural and heritage values of Macquarie Island are protected from threats and conserved for current and future generations. The Foundation aims to fund and help facilitate practical science and research programs, as well as provide supplementary support to management initiatives, student projects and

outreach activities which will benefit the conservation of Macquarie Island. The Foundation also seeks to provide an ongoing connection to Macquarie Island through news and updates about the island, and inspire the Tasmanian community to value and contribute to the protection of the island and its unique inhabitants. Specifically, the Foundation will:

- Raise funds for small grants and targeted conservation and research initiatives which align with the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service’s management of Macquarie Island.

- Provide an avenue for people to connect with the island through a website, social media and newsletters.

- Participate in community festivals and school outreach programs to promote awareness and appreciation of the natural and heritage values of Tasmania’s only sub-Antarctic island.

The Macquarie Island Conservation Foundation warmly invites you to our first winter Talk Series event of 2026!

Join us as we hear from Dr Justine Shaw, who will be giving a talk on Macquarie Island Biodiversity.

📅 When: Wednesday, 10th June
🕕 Time: 6:00 pm arrival for a 6:30 pm start
📍 Where: Fern Tree Tavern

It’ll be a relaxed and inspiring evening — grab a meal, enjoy a drink, and discover the conservation story of Macquarie Island with Dr Justine Shaw, whose work has helped shape our understanding of ecosystem recovery, invasive species impacts, and the protection of one of Australia’s most unique environments.

The Macquarie Island Field Guide in action! 🦭🐧🌱

Over the past couple of months our newly launched Field Guide has been helping tourists, guides, expeditioners and researchers to learn more about the fascinating flora and fauna of the island. The "My Sightings" function, allowing users to curate their own species list, has been particularly popular.

The Macquarie Island Field Guide is the first definitive, digital field guide for Macquarie Island and features detailed information of over 130 species. It is available as a downloadable App and also online.
