TasBuild has announced a partnership with Oreana to establish the Tasmanian Private Credit Fund, designed to provide flexible finance options for local construction and development projects.

The Fund aims to help unlock projects, support jobs and strengthen industry capacity, particularly as many builders and developers face challenges accessing traditional lending.

Importantly, all lending will be focused within Tasmania, helping ensure investment flows directly to local projects and businesses.

🚧 Construction Industry Alert – Portable Long Service Leave 🚧

If your business operates in Tasmania’s construction industry, you’re required to register eligible workers with TasBuild to ensure they’re covered by the portable long service leave (LSL) scheme.

✅ Why register?
Registered employers benefit from:
🔹 Reduced financial risk and large leave liabilities
🔹 Less administrative workload
🔹 Better attraction and retention of skilled workers
🔹 A lower contribution rate of 1.8% (instead of 2.5%) when compliant – saving your business money
🔹 Worker entitlements paid directly by TasBuild, with access to 13 weeks’ leave after 10 years (pro rata from 7 years)

Since 1998, TasBuild has supported Tasmania’s construction industry by allowing workers to accumulate long service leave across multiple employers—strengthening workforce stability and mobility.

⚠️ Watch out for BEC scams in the construction sector ⚠️

Cybercriminals are targeting the building and construction industry in Tasmania with Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams, and they’re getting smarter.

🔍 What’s a BEC scam?
Criminals impersonate businesses or employees via email to trick victims into sending legitimate payments to fraudulent bank accounts.

🏗️ Why construction?
- High-value transactions.
- Frequent invoicing.
- Small, family-run businesses often lack strong cybersecurity.
- Time-poor operators = easy targets.

🎯 How they do it
- Tender Surveillance: scammers monitor public tenders for contract details and payment info.
- Invoice Impersonation: they pose as suppliers, send fake invoices with their bank details, and even call pretending to be finance staff to pressure quick payment.
- Once paid, the money usually goes overseas and is gone for good.

❗ These scams are highly sophisticated
They mimic tone, formatting, and even reference real past communications. It’s social engineering at its best, and it works.

🔒Protect your business
- Always verify payment requests with a trusted contact – not the details on the invoice.
- If you’ve paid incorrectly, contact your bank immediately.
- Implement ACSC's Essential Eight cybersecurity strategies: cyber.gov.au/business-government/asds-cyber-security-frameworks/essential-eight
- Report suspicious activity via ReportCyber: cyber.gov.au/report

Stay alert and share this with your colleagues. Don’t let scammers cash in on your hard work!

Jack is 32 years old and a glazier by trade. He first started working as a young 16-year-old for his father’s glazier business and has since moved on to work for other glaziers in Launceston.
The entitlement Jack has applied for will be used to fund an investment opportunity and he is going to build himself a garage, showing the flexibility available for workers covered by TasBuild.
When asked about his experience and applying for an entitlement with TasBuild Jack said that the process was very easy, he accessed the TasBuild portal and completed the application and uploaded the necessary documents.

Congratulations Jack on reaching an entitlement – ENJOY
