Koala Kids Foundation Koala Kids volunteers provide small things for children and young people during cancer treatment

When a baby, child or young person under the age of 26 is diagnosed with cancer, life-saving treatment starts immediately. This throws every aspect of family life into chaos and puts schooling, jobs, hobbies and family relationships at risk. Koala Kids purpose is to bring happy moments to children and young people during cancer treatment and alleviate the stress on their families and healthcare te

ams. Since 2005 Koala Kids has been providing relevant and meaningful programs and activities not offered by any other charities to families with children with cancer. We have received generous donations and in kind support from benefactors who believe in what we do such as Korjo, Suncorp and Provincial Home Living. Independent research in 2020* revealed that the families highly value what we offer. One of our respondents put it this way, “You bring joy to kids’ lives who are going through such a horrible illness. The little gifts can make a child’s treatment day easier to cope with and are a great distraction.”

Looking for a meaningful corporate volunteering experience?

Koala Kids offers corporate volunteering sessions, giving teams of up to 10 people the chance to spend a morning behind the scenes at Koala Kids HQ and make a real difference.

Our sessions run from 9:30am to 12:30pm and involve a range of hands-on activities, from packing and preparing resources to stickering and other practical tasks that help us support children and young people during cancer treatment.

Our corporate volunteers often tell us how rewarding the experience is:

"Wonderful session. I am so grateful to have been involved! I really enjoyed learning the story behind Koala Kids and the incredible work you do."

"Amanda has a wealth of knowledge and is very engaging. We thoroughly enjoyed our time."

We still have availability in November and December, and bookings for 2027 are now open.

If your team would like to get involved, visit the Corporate Volunteering section of our website or email [email protected] to find out more.

How incredible is this?! Thanks to 3D printing, the radiotherapy masks at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre have been taken to another level!

Children undergoing radiotherapy treatment on their head and neck region are required to wear a moulded mask to help them to hold still to ensure targeted treatment. Since 2018, the team at Peter Mac and volunteers from Koala Kids have been decorating the masks, both with paint and 3D printed elements provided by Koala Kids, helping make the daunting experience a little less scary and more personal.

Together we are nearing a special milestone of 150 decorated masks, each one is as unique as the child or young person for whom it is created. This special mask, Godzilla, was created for an 11 year old, who has now finished treatment and cannot wait to mount it on their bedroom wall!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the experiences of children with cancer, raise awareness, and campaign for better treatment and support.

Thanks to our incredible supporters and volunteers, Koala Kids continues to bring practical support, care and happy moments to children and families during cancer treatment 🧡

We’re so encouraged by the results of a recent independent, pro bono survey of our Happy Base families, conducted by IMO Analytics. The feedback highlights the meaningful impact Koala Kids is having, and the difference your support makes!

Coffee MIO has been keeping Koala Kids caffeinated for more than 10 years!

As Melbournians, one thing we absolutely love is coffee, and at Koala Kids we know that caffeine becomes even more important for parents and carers when their child is in hospital.

Each year, we provide thousands of coffee vouchers to families, along with coffee and pod machines to help make their hospital experience a little more comfortable. Thanks to Coffee Mio’s generous support, we also keep everyone well stocked with coffee pods and fresh beans, with our volunteers also serving up delicious hot coffees every Friday in the Children's Cancer Centre!

Can Jess guess all 20 Koala Kids programs?

Our programs are divided into three key areas: Family Support, Procedural Support, and Distraction & Engagement.

Koala Kids now supports thousands of families across Victoria and Tasmania through these programs.

How many programs do you think Jess can remember? Watch out for Part 2, where she’ll take on the remaining programs across the other two program areas!

18 Storytime PADS/PODS and counting 📚

We’re so proud to have recently added our 18th Storytime Pad to our growing network across Victoria and Tasmania.

With the PADS mounted on a moveable trolley for accessibility between rooms and overbed setups, or the PODS designed for children to sit in, these devices offer a diverse range of educational and entertainment content in over 10 languages, specifically tailored for toddlers and primary school-age children.

From Disney favourites and ABC Kids adventures to The Wiggles, interactive learning, and beloved storybooks, Storytime brings comfort, distraction and happy moments during hospital stays, helping to ease boredom and anxiety through play and imagination.

When a child is in cancer treatment, dinner doesn’t happen by itself.

179 meal hampers have been funded so far thanks to our generous community. With your help, we're so close to reaching even more families this financial year.

If you've been meaning to give, this is the moment. Your $150 tax-deductible donation provides one complete hamper, selected by the family, delivered to their door.

When a child is in cancer treatment, dinner doesn't happen by itself.

Often, it becomes one of the first everyday things to fall away between hospital visits, treatment, and extra time away from home.

This EOFY, $150 puts a meal hamper on a family's doorstep.

Three family-style meals, a dessert, all chosen by them.

Last year we delivered 287. This year, we want to reach more. 🧡
