πŸ’œ "It is her place of sunshine. It is joy, music, bubble baths, art, adventures, Malvern shopping trips and lazy rivers."

When people hear the word hospice, they often imagine sadness.

For eight-year-old Beatrice, Very Special Kids House is something very different.

This World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, Beatrice's mum Bronwyn shares what hospice care means to their family, and why Very Special Kids has become a place of joy, belonging and childhood.

This World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we are celebrating a national milestone. πŸ πŸ’œ

Thirty years ago, Very Special Kids House was introduced as Australia’s first children’s hospice, expanding what was possible for children and families receiving paediatric palliative care.

These images reflect both the history and evolution of Very Special Kids House. In 2023, the hospice was rebuilt to meet the changing needs of children and families, while preserving the warmth, comfort and sense of belonging that have always been at its heart.

Our late Patron, Sister Margaret Noone IBVM AM, once described it as "a home in the true sense of the word".

Today, that legacy continues through expert respite, end-of-life and after death care, supporting children and families through some of life's most challenging moments.

Race weekend is almost here! πŸƒ

Our incredible Team Very Special Kids runners will take on the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival in support of seriously ill children and their families.

With plenty of training runs under their belts, including sessions guided by Jarrod from BFIRM Personal Training, they're ready to hit the ground running.

Along the way, they've built momentum both on and off the track, rallying vital fundraising support for children and families connected to Very Special Kids.

From all of us, a very special thank you and good luck!

During a recent stay at our family accommodation, Apryl, her brother Blake and their family had a welcoming place to call home while travelling to Melbourne for specialist hospital appointments. 🏠

Between nursing support, colourful science experiments, arts and crafts, new friendships and plenty of fun in the soft play area, the family created special memories and felt welcomed from the moment they arrived.

As Apryl's mum Kali shared, β€œThe nurses and team here are just magic... Our time there was amazing, we left there feeling like we were family."

For families travelling long distances – our family accommodation provides a home away from home – ensuring everyone can stay together while receiving the care and support they need. ✨

73% of Leo's classmates didn't know what palliative care was.

That's why the Very Special Kids’ sibling chose it as the focus of his Grade 6 project. πŸ’™

Over two days, Leo shared his research with students, teachers and parents, helping raise awareness of children's palliative care and its impact on families.

Thank you, Leo, for starting important conversations and helping improve death literacy in your school community. ⭐
