The rationale for the establishment of the SADC-GMI was based on the importance of groundwater in the region and the need to set up a “Centre of Excellence” for groundwater resources and groundwater-dependent ecosystems development and management in the region; and to have an institution that will serve as an interlocutor with national, regional and international groundwater initiatives and institutions.

💧 Did you know? The quiet metal boxes, poles, and cables you might walk past near a borehole are actually monitoring stations — they measure how much water is stored underground, so communities don't run dry when a drought hits.
But across parts of Africa, people vandalize these stations, strip them for parts, or steal them. Every time that happens, we lose months (sometimes years) of data that helps predict droughts, protect drinking water, and plan for the future.

Our Team working on the “Groundwater for Advancing Resilience (G4DR) Project in Africa” visited Benin, Malawi, Mozambique, Togo, and Uganda to learn more about Vandalism challenges they face and is finding practical solutions to the problem — from getting local communities involved in protecting these sites, to better equipment design and smarter data backups.

Groundwater monitoring only works if the tools that measure it survive. Protecting them is protecting our water future. 🌍💦

🎉 That's a Wrap! Our 2nd SADC-GMI Winter School Has Officially Closed! 🎉
What an incredible two weeks it has been! Our Young Professionals came together to learn, grow, and build the skills needed to tackle groundwater challenges across the SADC region — and they're leaving with so much more than they came with! 💧
Over the course of the program, our YPs moved from classroom theory to hands-on practicals, covering topics like:

✅ Geophysics ✅ Groundwater Governance and Leadership ✅ Environmental and Social Impact Assessment ✅ Community Groundwater Supply Systems ✅ Applied Geophysics for Borehole Siting ✅ Practical GIS and Remote Sensing ✅ Best Practices in Borehole Drilling ✅ Groundwater Hydraulics: Pumping Test Application ✅ Groundwater Monitoring (Quality & Quantity)
Talk about a jam-packed, skills-filled two weeks! 🙌

🌟 The Big Finish: Innovation Challenge!
To wrap things up, our Young Professionals took part in an exciting Innovation Challenge, where they identified a real water-related problem and came up with a creative solution. The ideas were fresh, bold, and full of potential — proof that the future of groundwater management in Southern Africa is in good hands! 💡💧

None of this would have been possible without our amazing Key Resource Experts, who generously gave their time and expertise to guide our YPs every step of the way. 🙏

To our Young Professionals — congratulations on completing the program! We can't wait to see how you take these skills back home and make a real difference in your communities.

Here's to the next generation of groundwater champions! 🌍💦

🛰️ A Big Thank You to Dr. Kudzai Mpakairi! 🛰️

Our 2nd SADC-GMI Young Professional Winter School keeps getting better, thanks to experts like Dr. Kudzai Mpakairi, who generously shared his time and knowledge with our Young Professionals!

Dr. Mpakairi led a hands-on module on Practical GIS and Remote Sensing for Groundwater Professionals — teaching our participants how to use satellite imagery and mapping tools to locate, monitor, and manage groundwater resources. These are game-changing skills for anyone working to secure water resources across Southern Africa! 💧

From understanding spatial data to applying remote sensing techniques in real groundwater projects, our Young Professionals are leaving this session with practical, career-ready skills.

🙏 Thank you, Dr. Mpakairi, for empowering our future water leaders. We appreciate you!

💧 A Big Thank You to Prof. Francois Fourie! 💧

The 2nd SADC-GMI Young Professional Winter School has been an incredible journey of learning, and none of it would have been possible without our amazing Key Resource Experts, who showed up, shared their knowledge, and inspired the next generation.

Today, we're shining a spotlight on Prof. Francois Fourie, who led our Young Professionals through an exciting module on Geophysics — a skill that's absolutely essential for finding groundwater hidden beneath the earth's surface!

Thanks to Prof. Fourie's guidance, our participants now have a stronger understanding of how geophysical methods help experts locate water resources, especially in areas where it's needed most.

🙏 Thank you, Prof., for giving your time and expertise so generously. We know our Young Professionals will carry these lessons far into their careers!

🙏 A big thank you to Mrs Anna David-Negonga!

Today at the 2nd SADC-GMI Winter School, our Young Professionals learned all about Groundwater Monitoring (Quality & Quantity) and Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement in Groundwater Protection — led by Anna, our Senior Groundwater Specialist! 💧⚖️

Why does this matter so much? ✅ Monitoring helps us catch problems early — before boreholes run dry or water becomes unsafe to drink ✅ Strong rules and enforcement stop illegal or unsafe water use, protecting groundwater for everyone, now and in the future

Groundwater might be hidden underground, but the systems that protect it need to be strong and well understood! 🌍

Thank you, Anna, for sharing your incredible knowledge and helping to shape future water leaders! 👏

🇳🇦 Simeon Namweya from Namibia is reflecting on an amazing learning journey so far at the 2nd SADC-GMI Winter School at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein! 🎓

So far, Simeon has learned all about: 💧 Borehole Siting — how experts choose the BEST spot to drill a borehole 🌍 Environmental and Social Impact Assessment — making sure groundwater projects are safe for both people and the planet

"These sessions have really opened my eyes to how technical and environmental thinking work together," Simeon says.

Loving the growth, Simeon! Keep soaking up that knowledge! 👏💦

🌟 Spotlight! Meet Tuutaleni Angula from the Land of the Brave — Namibia! 🇳🇦

This isn't Tuutaleni's first rodeo — she's back for her 2ND SADC-GMI Winter School after first joining in 2025! 🙌

So what keeps bringing her back? "I wanted to learn from the experts and other fellow Young Professionals from the SADC Region," she says.

We love seeing young professionals like Tuutaleni return year after year to grow their skills and build friendships across Southern Africa. That's the spirit of teamwork and lifelong learning right there! 💧🌍

Welcome back, Tuutaleni — excited to see you grow even further! 👏
