PEN We see a South Africa where everyone belongs and thrives We strive to ignite change, nurture individuals and heal communities.

Founded in 1992, our organisation is community based, context wise (or wise enough), holistic in approach and sacrificial in service. To empower people to move from dependency to dignity. Poverty and inequality in South Africa is systemic and multigenerational. PEN’s projects work together to deliver an ecosystem of care to vulnerable families to enable them to break free of injustice and poverty,

one family line at a time. Ending the cycle of poverty in a family line ends it forever. With this as the focus, in time there will be fewer people in desperate need of assistance. PEN serves three distinct people groups: Young Children (aged 0-6), Youth (aged 7-25) and Destitute Adults. Each of PEN’s projects have the following elements woven into them: Restoration of identity, Holistic care, a Multi-generational approach, Intentional agility and efficiency. In 2019, PEN served over 3500 beneficiaries. 1072 received services directly from PEN and 2460 young children attended the ECD centres PEN supports to improve.

No handouts. Just dignity.

Do you know what the main problem with handouts is?

They create dependency. They erode personal effort, fuel a culture of waiting to be helped, and strip away a person's dignity. But just as damaging: handouts take away choice, demanding gratitude without ever asking what someone actually needs.

That’s why our PENdula shop works differently.

Through our PENdula system, community members reap the direct rewards of their own hard work, participation, and growth. They earn PENdula points through effort, and then they decide how to spend them.

Our shop stock might be simple and limited, but the impact isn't. Having the freedom to choose whether to spend your earnings on toothpaste or soap, snacks or socks—that is a vital step toward restoring dignity and self-determination.

Own effort. Own choice. 💙

To the untrained eye, it’s a car wash. To the person holding the sponge, it’s a badge of honor.

We don't hand out spots on our car wash team. Every single person in that parking lot has earned their place through hard work and personal commitment. Before anyone reaches this stage, they walk through a rigorous journey: following an Individual Development Plan, showing up to personal growth sessions, and demonstrating real responsibility day after day.

They start by assisting and learning the ropes, ensuring our standards are met - because our reputation and their pride are tied to every car that leaves clean.

When you get your car washed with us, you aren't offering charity. You’re supporting skill-building, accountability, and an opportunity to shine.

Women Who Shape the Future: Mama Johanna Kubeka 💛✨

Food does more than nourish - it tells a child, "You are seen. You belong."

As our Master Chef at PEN Youth, Mama Johanna Kubeka knows that for many of our kids, a warm plate of food is the anchor of their day. But what makes her kitchen extraordinary isn’t just what’s on the menu - it’s the heart behind it. Every afternoon, Mama Johanna pours maximum love into every dish. As the kids step up to receive their meal, she greets them by name, asks about their day, and hands over a generous serving of kindness.
And when someone steps out of line? She channels them right back onto the path with the fierce, loving authority only a mother holds. She doesn't just prepare food; she builds hope, one smile at a time.
Today, we honor Mama Johanna for shaping the future of PEN’s youth through who she is and everything she does.

As Women’s Month comes to a close, we want to honor the unsung heroes of our communities: the incredible women running early childhood development centers across our country.

We partner with 269 daycares where passionate women create safe, happy spaces for children to play and learn. Your gift of cleaning products can help them keep their classrooms clean and healthy.

When you donate basic hygiene supplies, you take a heavy financial burden off these women, allowing them to focus their energy and resources on nurturing, teaching, and leading.

How to honor these amazing women this week:

Check out our item wishlist on the flyer below 📋

Order items on your favourite grocery delivery app, and set the delivery address straight to PEN (870 Park Road, Arcadia: 8-4 weekdays)

Drop physical donations at our office or a local church that supports PEN.

Let’s finish Women’s Month strong by surrounding these leaders with the practical support they deserve! 💙

Dignity isn't given. It’s rebuilt, one skill at a time. 🔧

Last week, we talked about "sweat money" and why everyone contributes at our shelter. But contribution isn't just about chores: it’s about opening possibilities.

Arriving on time. ⏰

Washing a car properly. 🚗

Contributing meaningfully to a conversation. 💬

Holding a drill for the first time. 🛠️

None of these things are just tasks. They are stepping stones. Every time someone picks up a tool, learns something new, or takes responsibility, they are regaining belief in what they can achieve.

We don't hand out quick fixes. We walk alongside people as they open new doors for themselves.

Dignity over handouts. Always.

At our shelter, living together means contributing together. We don't do free giveaways that leave people feeling like passive recipients.

If a resident can’t contribute in cash for his bed and meals, he pays in "sweat money"—taking ownership through daily chores, like keeping our PEN vehicles clean and ready for action. 🧼🚗

Why? Because contribution builds dignity. It reminds every man that he has value, purpose, and something meaningful to bring to the table.

Everyone contributes. Everyone matters.
