🚢 🐟 In a fishing town on China’s east coast, 37 fishermen pooled their money to build a deep-sea research vessel. Months after its launch, it’s still waiting for its first assignment.

The third story in our series, reported by Chengyu Wang and Tim Wu for Initium Media 端傳媒, looks at China’s growing push to explore the deep ocean—and why the business behind it hasn’t caught up.

🌊 The High Seas Treaty is now in effect—and this January, countries meet for its first-ever COP. Want to be in the room? Apply for our BBNJ COP1 Reporting Fellowship! 👇

Also known as the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), the treaty will bring countries together in New York City on January 11–22, 2027, to take up questions like how to classify marine protected areas on the high seas and how to evaluate the environmental impact of activities beyond national borders.

We're supporting 10 journalists to travel there and report from BBNJ COP1.

Fellows receive:
🔹 Airfare, accommodation, meals, travel medical insurance, and a per diem
🔹 Press accreditation and logistical support
🔹 A pre-conference virtual workshop and an orientation day with ocean experts
🔹 Daily briefings and story guidance from EJN's media trainers

Open to professional journalists reporting from coastal countries, in any medium, with experience covering ocean issues. Freelancers are welcome to apply with a letter of support from a media outlet. We especially encourage journalists from Namibia, Ecuador, Peru, Seychelles, Japan, Spain, Canada, and South Korea to apply.

🌊 The ocean covers more than 70% of the planet, yet it remains some of the least-covered ground in the news. We're working to change that.

From September 15–17, EJN and Schmidt Ocean Institute brought together Brazilian journalists, marine scientists, and policy experts for three days of intensive training focused on strengthening ocean reporting in Brazil.

Workshop Participants:

🚢 Toured the research vessel R/V Falkor (too), gaining a firsthand look at how scientists map and explore the deep sea, including with the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian

🌿 Met with the Indigenous community of Japuara to learn about traditional ecological knowledge and hear local concerns about hyperscale data centers and tourism development on the coast

📊 Learned to investigate fishing activity, marine heatwaves, and coastal change using Global Fishing Watch and Copernicus Marine data

They left with new story ideas, and with a growing network of journalists committed to putting the ocean on Brazil's front pages.

Thank you to trainers Sam Schramski, Gustavo Faleiros, Maristela Crispim, and Professor Ronaldo Christofoletti for making this possible.

📣 Introducing Mining the Unknowns, our latest cross-border investigation into deep-sea mining across the Asia-Pacific 🌊👇

We've partnered with five newsrooms across the region— Cook Islands Television News, DUNIA, Solomon islands Business Magazine, 東洋経済オンライン, and Initium Media 端傳媒—to dig into the people, politics and industries driving the race to mine the seabed, and the ecosystems and communities with the most to lose.

In South Korea, journalist Grace Moon reveals how the country has quietly built a foothold across nearly every stage of the future seabed minerals supply chain. Yet South Korea has repeatedly failed to pass a law regulating deep-sea mining in international waters, a gap experts warn could put one of Earth's least explored habitats at risk.

🌐 Following a highly competitive selection process, the Earth Journalism Network, Informed Earth, and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security have selected 14 journalists and two independent creator-journalists from across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Pacific to report on the negotiations shaping the next phase of global climate action — from climate finance and infrastructure to progress on mitigation and adaptation.

Supported by experienced journalists and media trainers on the ground — Joydeep Gupta, Fermín Koop and Imelda Abaño — our fellows will bring these global discussions closer to the communities most affected by climate change, helping audiences in climate-vulnerable countries understand what decisions made at mean for them.

📰 Since 2007, the CCMP has helped more than 550 journalists report from the annual United Nations climate summit.

🎬 It's here — our AMA on tracking journalism's impact is live!

You asked for it (literally — this topic won our community poll), so on September 21 we brought together newsroom leaders, journalists, and impact experts to tackle your toughest questions: What actually counts as impact? How do you prove your reporting moved the needle? And what tools make that job easier?

Khóa học này là một phần của "It's a Wash" – dự án đưa tin hợp tác xuyên biên giới của chúng tôi.
