How do Indonesians view the rapidly changing regional and global landscape? How do those perspectives compare with those across Southeast Asia?

Join USINDO on Thursday, May 21st for an Open Forum, “Indonesia and the State of Southeast Asia,” exploring how political, social, and economic developments are shaping Indonesian public opinion and perceptions of regional and global affairs.

As Indonesia navigates an increasingly dynamic geopolitical environment, public attitudes toward neighboring countries, major global powers, and domestic priorities continue to evolve. This forum will examine how Indonesians perceive the greatest opportunities and challenges facing their country, including attitudes toward the United States, China, and ASEAN, as well as how these views have shifted over time.

The forum will feature Melinda Martinus, Fellow and Acting Co-coordinator of the ASEAN Studies Centre at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute; Julia Lau, Principal Fellow and Coordinator of the Indonesia Studies Programme at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute; and Dr. Siwage Dharma Negara, Principal Fellow, Co-coordinator of the Indonesia Studies Programme, and Coordinator of the Singapore APEC Studies Centre at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. The conversation will be moderated by Ambassador David Merrill, President of USINDO.

Be part of the conversation as experts explore how Indonesians are responding to a changing regional landscape and what these evolving attitudes may mean for Indonesia and Southeast Asia moving forward.

Date and time: Thursday, May 21 at 8:30 a.m. EDT / 7:30 p.m. WIB.

USINDO will host a Special Open Forum on Thursday, April 23, titled “Indonesia’s Response to the Global Energy Crisis.” This online discussion will examine the impact of rising global energy prices and supply disruptions on Indonesia, and what these developments mean for economic stability and energy policy.

Global fuel and energy prices have surged following geopolitical tensions and disruptions in key supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. These pressures have affected industries worldwide and placed added strain on national budgets. As an energy importing country, Indonesia has been directly impacted, prompting measures to stabilize supply, manage subsidies, and explore alternative energy sources.

This forum will explore how Indonesia is navigating these challenges, including efforts to diversify energy partners, strengthen domestic energy resilience, and balance economic growth with energy security. It will also assess the broader implications of the global energy crisis on Indonesia’s long term policy direction.

The discussion will feature Clayton Seigle, Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); Satya Widya Yudha, Member of the National Energy Council of the Republic of Indonesia; Heriyanto Irawan, Member of the National Economic Council of the Republic of Indonesia; and Randi Bachtiar, Energy Finance Specialist for Indonesia at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). The conversation will be moderated by Ambassador David Merrill, President of USINDO.

Join this discussion as experts examine how Indonesia is responding to global energy uncertainty and consider the strategies shaping its energy future.

USINDO will host an Open Forum on Thursday, March 19, titled "Managing Uncertainty: Assessing U.S.–Indonesia Trade Developments.” This online discussion will examine recent changes shaping the trade relationship between the United States and Indonesia and what they mean for businesses, policymakers, and economic cooperation moving forward.

The U.S.–Indonesia trade landscape has been evolving rapidly. Following the announcement of new U.S. import duties in 2025 and the subsequent Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART), both countries have entered a period of adjustment marked by shifting tariff policies, regulatory changes, and renewed negotiations. These developments raise important questions about the direction of bilateral trade, investment flows, and economic strategy.

The discussion will feature Dr. Edi Prio Pambudi, Deputy Minister for Coordinating International Economic Cooperation at Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs; William Reinsch, Scholl Chair in International Business at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); Ambassador Brian D. McFeeters (ret.), Interim CEO and President of the US–ASEAN Business Council; and Edmund Sim, Partner at Appleton Luff International Law Firm. The conversation will be moderated by Ambassador David Merrill, President of USINDO.

Join this discussion as leading experts examine the evolving trade environment between the United States and Indonesia and consider how governments and businesses are responding to a period of economic uncertainty.

USINDO is pleased to host an Open Forum on Thursday, February 26, titled “A Tale of Two Cities: Environmental Governance in Jakarta and Nusantara.” This online discussion will examine the mounting environmental pressures facing Indonesia’s current capital and the sustainability ambitions of its future one.

As urbanization accelerates and climate risks intensify, Jakarta continues to confront flooding, land subsidence, pollution, and infrastructure strain. At the same time, Nusantara has been envisioned as a greener, more sustainable capital in East Kalimantan, though the project also raises important environmental and governance questions. This forum will explore how Indonesia can strengthen environmental governance across both cities while balancing development and sustainability goals.

The discussion will feature Mia Amalia, ST, MSi, PhD, Deputy for Planning and Land Affairs at the Nusantara Capital Authority; Dr. Yus Budiyono, Senior Researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN); Dr. Andres Sevtsuk, Associate Professor of Urban Science and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); and Dr. Agus Sari, CEO of Landscape Indonesia. The conversation will be moderated by Ambassador Robert O. Blake Jr., USINDO Co-Chairman.

Join this timely and forward-looking conversation on the challenges and opportunities shaping environmental governance in Indonesia’s current and future capitals.

A notable moment occurred when President Prabowo Subianto delivered remarks before American business leaders and government officials at the Gala Iftar Business Summit.

Prabowo reflected on the legacy of his father, renowned economist Soemitro Djojohadikusumo, who played an important role in the history of bilateral relations between Indonesia and the United States.
The event was hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S.–ASEAN Business Council, and the United States–Indonesia Society (USINDO) in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2026) local time.

“I feel deeply honored to be here tonight at the invitation of the U.S.–ASEAN Business Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and USINDO—which, I should note, my father once served as one of the co-presidents representing Indonesia in the organization’s early years,” President Prabowo said.

The United States–Indonesia Society (USINDO) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nongovernmental organization founded in 1994 by Edward E. Masters, former U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, and Indonesian senior economist Sumitro Djojohadikusumo.
