Today - May 20, 2026 - marks the Eight Anniversary of the Washington Nationals unanimously selecting TDJBCF Founder and Civic Leader Thelma D. Jones as their Inaugural Major League Baseball Bat Girl. Gregory McCarthy, Vice President, Community Engagement, Washington Nationals Baseball Club said: “We are proud to have selected Thelma D. Jones for this honor. Jones has not only distinguished herself nationally and locally in the breast cancer and cancer arena in general since her diagnosis in 2007, but also as a staunch community activist working closely for several years with the Nationals Baseball as a representative of the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly. She also works closely with many of the region’s cancer centers such as George Washington Cancer Center and Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center and cancer organizations such as Susan G. Komen, American Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network where she regularly lobbies Congress and the DC City Council for funding of to***co control and cancer research." Crawford, PhD (Retired) (Pittsboro, NC), Emeritus Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine, and Thom Elmore, MPA, PhD, CEO, Addiction Recovery Care Association (ARCA) (Winston-Salem).
