At our Exhibitor booth at the Population Association of America Annual Meeting earlier this month, we offered a quiz on global population trends to engage conference goers in conversation. Some were surprised at their own results. Check out some of the highlights from the quiz results below!

โžก๏ธ 117 people took our Population Trends Quiz at the Population Association of America Annual Meeting from May 6th to 9th.

โžก๏ธ The average number of points scored was 3.67 out of 7 points.

โžก๏ธ The most frequently missed question (only 27 out of 117 correct responses) was โ€œApproximately what proportion of pregnancies globally are unintended?โ€ โœ… The answer: Nearly half.

โžก๏ธ The question with the highest number of correct responses (93 out of 117 correct responses) was โ€œWhat is the approximate replacement-level fertility rate (in other words, the level at which a population would maintain a constant size over time without migration)?โ€
โœ… The answer: 2.1 births per woman.

May is *xEdForAll Month ๐Ÿ—ฃ No matter who you are or where you live, you deserve access to s*x education that is age-appropriate and covers a wide range of topics.

Adolescent s*xual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality mutually reinforce aspects of girlsโ€™ and womenโ€™s well-being. When girls are healthy and safe from gender-based violence, their education, economic opportunities, decision-making power, and sense of agency expand. When they are educated and able to enjoy equal rights, they are better equipped to promote their own health and welfare, as well as that of their family and community.

Join us in welcoming our 2026 Stanback Fellows from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke's Stanback Program for the summer! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐ŸŒฑPictured left to right: Gabrielle Douglas, Communications Fellow; Lauren Blake, rePROs Fight Back Fellow; Jiyeong Pyo, Research Fellow; and Karina Huang, FP/Earth Fellow.

They had an energizing orientation week, with an introduction to s*xual and reproductive health and rights and how population trends shape our future, as well as an exploration of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, a hop-on, hop-off tour of Washington, D.C., and a scavenger hunt.

We look forward to a wonderful summer with them and appreciate the contributions theyโ€™ll make to our work and team.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court gave abortion advocates a short-term victory.

The Court extended an order that providers can continue telehealth prescription and mail delivery of mifepristone after the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals had blocked a policy allowing patients to obtain mifepristone, a drug used in medication-induced abortions, online and through the mail.

The Louisiana v. FDA case will now be sent back to the Fifth Circuit for full briefing and arguments. The case will likely make its way back to the Supreme Court for a final ruling on the merits.

According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, hundreds of studies confirm mifepristoneโ€™s safety, and more than 7.5 million Americans have used the pill for abortion and miscarriage care since it was approved by the FDA in 2000. Research shows mifepristone is just as safe and effective when provided via telehealth as it is in a clinic.

In 2026, the fight for s*x education is more urgent than ever.

From book bans and curriculum censorship to attacks on LGBTQ+ students and restrictions on reproductive care, young peopleโ€™s access to honest, inclusive education is under attack.

Thatโ€™s why May is *xEdForAll Month: a national call to action to ensure ALL young people, no matter their zip code, race, gender, or income, get access to medically accurate, age-appropriate s*x education.

S*x ed gives young people facts. It helps build healthy relationships, make informed decisions about their bodies, and stay safe in a complex world.

Cรฉilne Delacroix, senior fellow and director of FP/Earth, had an active month with public engagement and knowledge-sharing activities.

๐Ÿ”ต On April 1st, she delivered a well-received three-hour conference on reproductive rights, demography, and the environment in Lac-Mรฉgantic, Quรฉbec, organized by the Universitรฉ de Sherbrooke's Universitรฉ du Troisiรจme ร‚ge, drawing an enthusiastic audience eager to explore questions of population aging, fertility decline, and environmental sustainability in a North American context.

๐Ÿ”ต Later in the month, she joined a career panel for Population Health PhD students at the University of Ottawa and moderated the Association for Environmental Sciences and Studies Student Research Symposium, a rewarding opportunity to engage with emerging researchers in both population health and environmental studies in Canada and the United States.

What is ? Femicide refers to the intentional killing of women or girls because of their gender. This type of gender-based harm is often the final act in an ongoing pattern of abuse, coercion, and control, most frequently perpetrated by intimate partners or known individuals.

Femicide affects all communities, but the impact is disproportionate, due to a long history of colonization and systemic oppression. Indigenous women and girls face some of the highest levels of violence in the countryโ€”up to 10 times higher than the national average.

The Population Association of America Annual Meeting is the premier gathering for demographers, social and health scientists, policymakers, and media to share ideas and connect across disciplines, all centered around population research.

We shared our new set of briefs that provide an updated look at population and the environment across biodiversity loss, water resources, and climate change vulnerability, and feature case studies from the field. These range from population dynamics, bison, and conservation efforts in the Northern Great Plains to demographic and water resource pressures in Niger. Check them out here: https://www.populationinstitute.org/resource/an-updated-look-at-population-and-the-environment/.

The Annual Meeting may be over, but these conversations continue. Stay engaged with us at the Population Institute for updates on our work.
