"Pluralism is simply a fact of the world. We do not get to choose whether we live or work alongside those who agree with us, but we do get to choose the posture we bring to it."

In her May CEO update, Romanita Hairston reflects on a recent conversation with John Inazu at Leadership Now about living and working across difference. Not all differences are the same depth, and knowing which one you're navigating changes how you show up. She explores four levels: norms and practices, values, ideology, and worldview, and shares how the nonprofit sector is uniquely positioned to model this framework.

Is your language helping or hurting your leadership? Is it fostering trust or deepening divides?

Our benefactor, Jack Murdock, believed that celebrating diverse cultures and beliefs strengthens the Pacific Northwest.

This Jewish American Heritage Month, we're honoring three institutions dedicated to preserving history, advocating for human rights, and providing year-round education: Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, Wassmuth Center for Human Rights, and Holocaust Center for Humanity.

We are grateful to these partners as well as the many others in our region who champion building inclusive communities while preserving stories of the past and creating spaces of joy and belonging across our region.

This May, we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and the theme 'Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together.'

In 2024, we talked with Asian Health & Service Center and The Northwest Catholic Counseling Center about how culturally responsive mental health care can improve health outcomes and yield generational change. Honoring a person’s full self and administering care in one’s native language and cultural context, leads to stronger communities where people can show up authentically.

For over 16 years, Leadership Now has created space for leaders of faith to pause, connect, and explore complex questions together. Leadership Now 2026 was no exception, and this year's theme, "Fully Alive: Leading with Conviction in a Changing World," felt especially timely.

We felt so encouraged by the connections made during table discussions, the wisdom shared from our speakers, and the evident dedication of the nearly 300 leaders in the room.

It was a reminder that even in demanding seasons, leaders who are rooted and connected to one another can move forward with clarity and hope. Thank you to everyone who joined us, our speakers, and the staff who continue to pour so much value into the event!

What combines American history, STEM education, career training, and fun? In Tacoma, WA, the answer is LeMay - America's Car Museum.

Since it opened in 2012, the museum has aimed to preserve and interpret the history and technology of the automobile. Its vision is to inspire future generations through educational programs, foster community around this shared love, and showcase innovative design.

We were proud to support LeMay through a 2025 capital grant for a new interactive exhibit. Two new experiences are now available for museumgoers: a world-first racing simulator that puts visitors behind the wheel of real aerodynamics, and an updated Learning Zone where families and students can engage with STEM concepts hands-on — making the science behind automotive innovation something you can feel, not just read about.

Thank you, LeMay, for providing engaging experiences that learners of all ages can grow from!

Diverse perspectives strengthen nonprofit work.

The case for pluralism, the embrace of diverse perspectives and approaches, is sometimes framed as a moral one: it's the right thing to do. But it's also deeply practical.

CEO Romanita Hairston explores how pluralism produces better outcomes by defining three types, identifying which is most beneficial to leaders, and explaining why it matters for sustainable impact.
