Today in history: August 27th, Krakatoa's catastrophic eruption.

The island volcano Krakatoa erupted with a series of cataclysmic explosions. The explosions (which could be heard 3,000 miles away) and the resulting tsunami in Indonesia's Sunda Strait claimed 36,000 lives in Java and Sumatra.

August 26th is celebrated annually as Women's Equality Day, commemorating the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment, which granted American white women the constitutional right to vote. Women of color were not able to vote till 1965.
