Progress continues to be made throughout the city and township on the storm recovery efforts, and we are so thankful to our school grounds crews and the crews throughout the city and township who have tirelessly worked to clean up our community. Each of our 10 schools still has power restored. Our kitchens are fully stocked for breakfast and lunch, and, thanks to student, staff, and family volunteers, our school properties have been cleaned up from the storm debris.

We are ready and excited to welcome students back to school on Tuesday, August 25. The start of this school year carries even more significance, as this day will mark a return to a sense of normalcy for many of our students. As a portion of our city still does not have power, starting school will provide our students with the opportunity to access air conditioning and a hot breakfast and lunch each day at no cost to families. If you have an extenuating circumstance that is preventing you from sending your child to school beginning tomorrow, please contact your child's school directly. We will work with families on a case-by-case basis to address any attendance concerns.

As you prepare for this new start to the school year, there are several steps you can take to help your child be successful:
- Review our Back to School Guide (sent to your email)
- Review teacher and/or schedule information from Back to School Night, Family Day, or Orientation Day
- Check your child's transportation information in the My Ride K-12 app (information may have been updated from last year)
- Add money for a la carte items in your child's My School Bucks account. (Breakfast and lunch are free to families each day, but additional food items are extra)

At the start of each school year, we ask families and community members to be aware of our students who are walking to school, waiting at bus stops, or riding the bus to school. This year, we are urging our community to take even more precautions as we continue to recover and clean up from the storm. Drivers should slow down for children walking to school and waiting at bus stops, and adhere to posted speed limits in school zones. Our big yellow buses will be back on the roads, so be aware of those stop arms and always stop for a school bus stop arm. The safety of our children is the responsibility of our entire community.

We truly cannot wait to welcome our students back to school tomorrow. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you then.

Message from PTS:
We want to provide you with an update on the first day of school and our plans to open our schools. Our custodial, maintenance, mechanic, and administrative teams met this morning to assess the safety of our buildings and access to resources. This is what we have found:

- All schools are currently without power except Portage High School.
- Several of our buildings have sustained damage. There are uprooted trees and roof damage across the district, which has created unsafe conditions.
- Due to the power outages, we are experiencing a loss of food at our schools. We will replace it and are working with our suppliers to schedule replacement deliveries as soon as possible.
- We are communicating with city and township officials. At this time, they are advising that recovery from the storm damage is ongoing. Many roads are unsafe, and sidewalks are littered with debris and wires.

Due to these factors, all of Portage Township Schools will remain closed for the remainder of this week, Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. We will continue communicating with the city and township as we all move forward with cleanup efforts. We intend to provide you with an update at the end of the week regarding the status of school for next week. In order to host school next week, we will need power restored to our buildings, safe conditions in and around our buildings, food replaced to be able to provide breakfast and lunch, and safe driving and walking conditions across the city and township.

We would like to thank our crews who are working on building assessments, cleanup efforts, and planning for our new first day of school. This is an unprecedented event for Portage, and it is certainly not how we anticipated beginning this school year. However, we know the resiliency of our community will shine through. Now is the time to show our strength and come together as one Portage.

We will provide you with our next update at the end of the week. Until then, stay safe.

Due to the effects of today’s storm, the first day of school tomorrow, August 12, is canceled for all PTS schools. All scheduled extracurricular activities are canceled today and tomorrow as well.

We are currently assessing the safety of our campuses and are remaining in contact with city and township officials to monitor the progress of recovery. We will keep everyone updated on the status of school for the remainder of the week once we better understand the extent of the damages across the city and township and have a timeline for recovery efforts.

We appreciate your understanding, as the first day of school brings a great deal of anticipation and excitement. However, we must prioritize the safety of our students, staff, and families.

Thank you, and we hope everyone is staying safe.

Our Schoolwide Picnic was a wonderful success, and it would not have been possible without the incredible support of our community.

A heartfelt thank you to Family Express for being such a valued part of our community and for providing water and cookies for our families to enjoy. Thank you to South Haven Burger King for supplying the ketchup and mustard, and to Luke Gas & Store for generously providing 100 hot dogs, with buns made possible through Arnie's Dog House Thanks to Mr. Lesich for lending a helping hand.

We would also like to recognize an amazing 5th grader, Faithlynn, who saw that help was needed and jumped right in without hesitation. Your kindness, leadership, and willingness to help others will be missed at South Haven. We know you will do great things, and you will always have a place here.

And of course, a special thank you to our little PTO helpers who arrive before school, stay after, lend a hand whenever needed, and remind us why we do what we do. Greyson, McKenleigh, Ben, Lily, Addison, Joleigh, Ireland, and Violet. Your enthusiasm, hard work, and smiling faces never go unnoticed.

One of the best parts of the day was getting to spend time with so many of our students and families. Seeing everyone together, making memories, sharing laughs, and celebrating another school year reminded us why our school community is so special.

While the school year is coming to a close, PTO is already hard at work planning more exciting opportunities for our students and families. Thank you for your continued support, generosity, and belief in our school. Together, we make South Haven a special place to learn, grow, and belong.
