Yesterday evening, a member of our community stopped by with orphaned baby bunnies seeking help when surrounding vets were closed for the night. While our paramedics expertise lies primarily in human emergency medical care, our on duty crew jumped right into action. They provided care for the injured bunnies overnight until a local animal hospital opened this morning.

Thank you to our A shift paramedics for going above and beyond!

Huge thanks to the South Haven Fire Department for going above and beyond once again—not just for people, but for animals too! Today, they stepped in to help some injured baby bunnies that had been dropped off, making sure they got safely transferred to a local wildlife rehabber.

Whether it's humans or animals in need, our community is lucky to have such compassionate first responders. We appreciate everything you do!

The Portage Township Trustee and South Haven Fire Department are taking applications to create an eligibility list for Firefighter/Paramedic positions that may come available in the next year.
The department currently will has one position that needs to be filled.
The list will be active following the testing process and will be active for one full calendar year or until all eligible candidates are exhausted from the list.
A valid CPAT card is required.
Interviews will be scheduled when the application period ends. All applicants at minimum must hold a current EMT-B certification in the State of Indiana and be 18 years of age or older. Applicants must obtain a State of Indiana Paramedic license within 18 months of date of hire. All applicants will be subject to a background check.
The application packet can be found on Indeed at Firefighter/Paramedic - Valparaiso, IN 46385 - Indeed.com or be requested via email at [email protected] or picked up at the Portage Township Trustee Office Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., 3590 Willowcreek Rd Suite B, Portage IN 46368.
Applications will be accepted for an immediate process and need to be turned in by 12 p.m., March 18, 2025.
