MDC - Metropolitan Development Council We have helped Pierce County with housing, health care, education, and employment since 1964. http:/

We help create vibrant communities by improving the lives of Pierce County's residents every day through our work in housing, health care, education, and employment. MDC is a vital community resource for Tacoma and Pierce County. Founded in 1964 as a non-profit Community Action Agency, MDC is committed to providing innovative programs that help remove people from a life of poverty and prepare them for self-sufficient living. For most of our 48 year history, MDC has responded to community needs by providing services that address the needs of low-income families. We have introduced national model programs such as “Housing First,” “Healthcare for the Homeless,” “College Bound,” and the “Educational Opportunity Center,” which, in turn, have improved lives and given hope to thousands of residents. Known by many names, the legal name of MDC is "Metropolitan Development Council," but we are doing business as "Making a Difference in Community," because that's what we do.

Thank you to Tacoma City Council Member Latasha Palmer for spending time with us at MDC!

We appreciated the opportunity to share more about the work happening across our programs, introduce some of the incredible people behind that work, and talk about the needs we continue to see throughout our community.

We’re always grateful when local leaders take the time to come through our doors, ask questions, and see firsthand how MDC is working to support individuals and families across Pierce County.

Thank you, Council Member Palmer, for the visit and the conversation!

Recovery doesn’t end when withdrawal does. 💙

This National Recovery Month and Su***de Prevention Month, we want our community to know MDC is here for the whole journey.

Our Withdrawal Management team is available 24/7, but support continues beyond those doors through Substance Use Disorder Therapy, Behavioral Health Services, education, employment, utility assistance, and other wraparound services.

Because healing means caring for the whole person, not just one moment.

When you’re ready, we’re here.

Housing is more than a place to live. It’s a foundation for what comes next.

MDC provides a range of housing options across our community, designed to meet people where they are and provide the stability and support they need to move forward.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll highlight MDC’s different housing communities, who they serve, and the role each plays in creating greater housing stability across Tacoma and Pierce County.

One community. Different needs. More pathways home.
