🏀 Tomorrow at Beyond the Block! 🏀

We’re excited to welcome Ahmaad Rorie as our special guest!

A Tacoma native, Ahmaad’s basketball journey took him from Lincoln High School to the University of Oregon and the University of Montana, where he earned First Team All-Big Sky honors and helped lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back conference championships. After building a successful professional basketball career overseas, he’s now giving back by mentoring youth and launching a one-on-one basketball league for the next generation.

Tomorrow, Ahmaad will be leading basketball skill development, sharing his journey, and helping guide our youth through an evening focused on conflict resolution, sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership during our Basketball Tournament & Open Gym.

📅 Tomorrow | Friday, July 17
🕠 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM
📍 Bryant Neighborhood Center

Youth ages 11–16 are invited to join us for an evening of basketball, mentorship, and community. We can’t wait to see everyone on the court! 💜🏀

🎵 Black Music Month Spotlight: MC Lyte

MC Lyte is a pioneer whose voice helped shape hip-hop and open doors for women in a genre that continues to influence the world. With confidence, clarity, and purpose, she showed that rap could be more than rhythm. It could be truth, storytelling, resistance, and power.

Her legacy reminds us that Black music has always been a place where people speak their stories, challenge the world around them, and create something that lasts.

As a culturally specific organization rooted in and committed to serving Black communities, Juneteenth holds special significance for us.

Today, we celebrate freedom, honor the resilience of those who came before us, and recognize the generations of Black leaders, advocates, families, and changemakers who continue to shape our communities every day.

Juneteenth is a reminder of how far we’ve come and the importance of continuing to build a future grounded in equity, opportunity, healing, and justice.

From all of us at Our Sisters’ House, Happy Juneteenth. ❤️💛💚

🎵 Black Music Month Spotlight: Nina Simone

Known as the “High Priestess of Soul,” Nina Simone was a singer, pianist, and activist whose voice helped shape both music and history. Through songs like Mississippi Goddam and To Be Young, Gifted and Black, she spoke openly about racial injustice, Black pride, and the fight for equality.

Nina Simone believed music could be a tool for change, and she used her platform to inspire courage, conversation, and action. Her legacy continues to remind us of the power that art, truth, and resilience can have in shaping a better future.
